DEPARTMENT STATEMENT

Vibrant, multidisciplinary and innovative, the Faculty of Arts and Science is one of Université de Montréal’s largest faculties. Through its 28 departments, schools, centres and one institute, it offers over 300 undergraduate and graduate programs, some of which are unique in Quebec. It is also home to some 30 interdisciplinary research centres and groups. Every day, its 650 faculty members are helping shape a better tomorrow by advancing knowledge and encouraging the convergence of perspectives.
The Department of Chemistry (https://chimie.umontreal.ca/english/home/) of the Université de Montréal is one of the most productive and dynamic chemistry departments in Canada and internationally. Its stellar reputation is based on the excellence of its faculty of 33 professors, several of whom are distinguished scholars and hold prestigious chairs. The Department’s laboratories are located on a new campus dedicated to the natural sciences (https://campusmil.umontreal.ca), with state-of-the-art infrastructure (materials characterization, NMR, X-ray diffraction, flow chemistry, mass spectrometry), which offer researchers well-equipped platforms, managed by research professionals. The Department is extremely well integrated into a dynamic research community, within the Université de Montréal and across Quebec and Canada.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Hold a Ph.D. in polymer synthesis or a related research field;
  • Have post-doctoral or equivalent research experience;
  • Have an excellent publication record in the field;
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality university teaching in polymer chemistry and synthesis at all levels;
  • Propose a world-class research program in synthetic polymer chemistry with the potential to develop internal, national, and international collaborations;

Responsibilities

Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate classes and develop pedagogical initiatives for our new undergraduate program, with a focus on polymer chemistry and synthesis;
  • Develop a high-level research program in polymers synthesis while expanding the frontiers of the discipline. The Department strongly encourages applicants who will develop an emerging research theme in the field of polymer synthesis (e.g. AI-driven synthesis of polymers, flow chemistry, green chemistry) with a high potential impact. Candidates with a research theme related to artificial intelligence could also apply for a position as an IVADO Professor (consortium for research, training and knowledge mobilization in artificial intelligence), which offers bonified start-up conditions. Candidates whose research theme that integrates materials science could become member of the Institut Courtois;
  • Contribute to committees and to the development of the Department, the Faculty, and the Institution through participation in scientific, administrative and social activities;
  • Participate in outreach activities to promote the discipline (publications, conferences, etc.).
