Technical Designer Job Description: This role requires a combination of subject matter knowledge, basic coding understanding, and critical thinking skills. The technical designer combines their background knowledge of concepts relevant to undergraduate course and/or laboratory instruction with their experience working with web languages and frameworks to translate customer instructional materials into interactive digital lab reports and lecture assignments. Responsibilities Content Development & Translation Converts traditional experimental procedures, report sheets, and lecture assignments into Catalyst Education’s proprietary digital format (DataFlow Module), ensuring alignment with educational goals and technical capabilities. Maintains a deep understanding of proprietary tools and their limitations to effectively translate instructional materials into digital content. Quality Assurance & Pedagogical Integrity Reviews pedagogical goals, learning objectives, and constraints (e.g., precision of lab tools) to design engaging and instructionally sound educational content. Ensures that all content meets high standards of clarity, accuracy, and educational value before submission. Technical Problem-Solving & Innovation Applies coding knowledge (e.g., JavaScript, JSON) to enhance interactivity and automate grading where appropriate, improving the user experience. Conducts research on new technologies, scripting techniques, and AI-assisted tools to optimize workflows and improve efficiency. Project Execution & Workflow Management Manages assigned tasks efficiently, balancing high-throughput demands with a commitment to quality. Identifies and flags incomplete or ambiguous requests, proactively seeking clarification to avoid errors or misinterpretations. Assists in maintaining and improving workflow documentation for both internal use and customer support. Collaboration & Training Supports the onboarding and training of new team members, including contractors and employees, on authoring tools and best practices. Collaborates with peers to suggest workflow improvements, participate in special projects, and contribute to tool enhancements. Cross-Team & External Engagement (As Needed) Works with the Instructional Design team to provide technical sales support during sales and early implementation processes. Consults with Instructional Designers and faculty clients to develop custom educational modules. Contributes to thought leadership initiatives, such as white papers, blog articles, conference presentations, or webinars. Assists in additional content production tasks, including quiz authoring and content review. Required Skills/Experience: Advanced degree in Chemistry Some college-level Chemistry teaching experience: either as TA, instructor, or lab coordinator Competent in one or more of these computer languages: JSON, JavaScript, LaTeX, HTML Able to understand scientific techniques and concepts and be able to communicate and explain them accurately and succinctly to various audiences Able to communicate professionally with clients Financial Attributes: Annual Base Compensation: $70,000-$80,000 based upon experience Benefits: Health/dental/vision insurance: Yes Retirement (401k) plan with Company match: Yes Important Notes: In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
