Reporting directly to the CEO and serving as a member of the executive leadership team, the CDO will build, lead, and scale a high-performing development department with a strong emphasis on: Major Gifts Planned Giving Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) Corporate & Foundation Partnerships Volunteer Engagement that Drives Revenue The CDO must have a proven track record of personally securing and leading teams to secure seven-figure gifts and multi-million-dollar annual fundraising portfolios. Requirements Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree Minimum of 10+ years of progressive fundraising experience, with at least 5 years in senior leadership Demonstrated success leading teams that have raised multiple millions of dollars annually Proven personal track record of securing six- and seven-figure major gifts Deep experience in major gifts, planned giving, and Donor Advised Fund strategy Experience building and managing development teams with measurable performance outcomes Strong knowledge of CRM systems, donor analytics, and moves management Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and executive presence skills Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree Active membership in the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) strongly preferred CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) credential Experience working closely with boards and executive leadership in high-growth nonprofit environment Performance Expectations Within the first 12–24 months, the CDO will: Increase overall philanthropic revenue through a diversified fundraising strategy. Expand the major gifts pipeline and increase average gift size. Launch or significantly strengthen a formal planned giving program. Activate volunteers and board members as fundraising partners. Build a scalable development infrastructure capable of sustaining long-term growth. Major Responsibilities and Duties Strategic Fundraising Leadership Develop and implement a multi-year comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with organizational growth goals Build and manage a diversified revenue portfolio including major gifts, planned giving, DAFs, corporate sponsorships, foundations, and individual donors Establish clear annual revenue targets and performance benchmarks that drive measurable results Partner with the CEO and Board to cultivate, solicit, and steward top-tier donors Major Gifts & Donor Advised Funds Manage a personal portfolio of high-capacity donors and prospects (six- and seven-figure potential) Lead strategy for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors Develop and execute strategies to secure gifts through Donor Advised Funds Implement sophisticated moves management systems to grow gift size and lifetime donor value Planned Giving Design and scale a robust planned giving program, including bequests, charitable trusts, and other legacy gifts Create marketing and donor education strategies to promote legacy giving Build long-term relationships that convert major donors into planned giving supporters Volunteer & Board Engagement for Fundraising Design and implement a volunteer engagement strategy that directly supports fundraising growth Equip board members and key volunteers with tools, training, and accountability structures to actively participate in cultivation and solicitation Develop ambassador programs that convert volunteers into donors and donor advocates Team Leadership & Department Management Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing development team Build a culture of accountability, data-driven performance, and revenue results Oversee CRM strategy, donor pipeline management, and performance reporting Ensure consistent donor stewardship and high-quality communications External Representation Serve as a key ambassador for the organization in the community Represent the organization at donor meetings, events, and partnership engagements Strengthen relationships with corporate, foundation, and philanthropic leaders Leadership Competencies Strategic thinker with strong revenue orientation Confident solicitor comfortable asking for transformational gifts Builder of teams and culture.
