EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • 7+ years of related experience, especially as a Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer or similar
  • People management experience (leading a team)
  • Trade school education, union training, military service or college is desirable
  • Universal CFC EPA certification
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams)
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs
  • Comfort using ladders up to 30 feet tall
  • Ability to frequently climb, bend, kneel, lift and/or drive
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • High-level relevant state / local license for Stationary Engineer and / or HVAC, plus universal level refrigerant recovery license
  • Computer skills and building automation systems experience required
  • Certification meeting OSHA ACM awareness training requirements as required

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHIEF ENGINEER

Seeking a reliable and experienced Chief Engineer to join our facilities team at a 34 story Class A commercial office property. This role focuses on keeping building systems running efficiently while delivering high standard support to tenants and ensuring operational excellence across the property.

  • Oversee the maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems
  • Supervise and manage engineers and maintenance staff including hiring, training, coaching and personal development
  • Create and routinely update a documented plan that includes preventive, predictive and reactive maintenance procedures
  • Participate regularly in client-facing and property team communications
  • Lead, create and manage engineering budget and participate in overall operating budget process
  • Select, schedule, supervise and direct contractors, monitor and document performance
  • Respond effectively to emergencies and service calls
  • Lead and organize ongoing technical, safety, and operational process training programs and procedures
  • Other duties as requested by property management team and/or client
  • Records pertinent data on all equipment in accordance with federal, state, and local codes
  • Process administrative paperwork in accordance with departmental policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates commitment to quality of service
  • Ensure compliance with corporate facility policies and procedures
  • Comply and participate in facility specific safety program
  • Maintain regular attendance of Engineering team at the workplace
  • Provides the highest quality of service to the tenants, staff, and visitors at the facility
  • Complete work orders and service requests in a timely and professional manner
  • Inspect building systems daily to ensure optimal performance

ADDITIONAL SKILLS TO ACE THE ROLE:

  • Supervise engineers, technicians, and maintenance staff
  • Train and certify staff in safety, equipment operation (including PIT, if relevant), and emergency response
  • Assign daily tasks, set priorities, and review work quality
  • Oversee operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, elevators, and other mechanical systems
  • Prepare and manage the engineering/maintenance budget and recommend capital improvement projects.
  • Forecast and control utility costs (electricity, gas, water, chilled water, etc.
  • Collaborate with property management and ownership on tenant build-outs, renovations and sustainability initiatives.
  • Recommend energy efficiency upgrades (LED retrofits, BAS optimization, demand response programs).
