POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for financial management, monthly monitoring, accounting and compliance for all Units of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains. In addition, this position is responsible for the management of all support staff, including technology support, and financial service staff. The CFO is a member of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains management team and is responsible for upholding, implementing, and guiding the organization in its values, mission, and values.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting or equivalent degree.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in financial leadership roles, ideally within nonprofit organizations; experience with fund accounting and GAAS strongly preferred.
  • Proven management and supervisory experience, demonstrating the ability to effectively lead, mentor, and develop a team.
  • Expertise with financial software systems and advanced proficiency in spreadsheet and data-management tools; prior experience with FE NXT strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of US GAAP, IRS regulations, and tax compliance requirements for 501(c)(3) organizations.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to analyze complex financial data and clearly communicate financial strategies, results, and projections to diverse stakeholders, including executive leadership and board members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission, core values, and teamwork philosophy of the Boys & Girls Club, fostering collaboration across departments.
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, and proactive, with exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.

Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Demonstrate commitment to Boys & Girls Club core values – good character, impact-driven focus, teamwork, and excellence – while actively contributing strategic financial vision and direction within the broader management team.
  • Serve as primary financial liaison and advisor to the Corporate Board, Finance Advisory Council, and Audit Committees, guiding through budgeting processes and providing expert counsel on financial matters across all organizational units.
  • Develop and implement ambitious annual goals, overseeing performance management and professional development for staff within business and technology support functions.

Financial Duties

  • Oversee external audits by coordinating timely information sharing, managing debt levels and covenant compliance, and ensuring adherence to all local, state, and federal reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Oversee timely processing of accounts payable and receivable, ensuring all payments, discounts, collections, payroll processing, taxes, PTO, and debt obligations are accurately managed.
  • Maintain accurate, organized accounting records, including monthly bank reconciliations, chart of accounts, and a structured filing system.
  • Implement and manage robust internal controls and procedures to safeguard financial integrity across all accounting transactions.
  • Prepare and distribute timely, accurate monthly financial statements to the board of directors; oversee annual report preparation and coordinate financial audits.
  • Develop annual budgets, forecasts, financial metrics, and benchmarks; analyze variances and promptly report key financial issues and performance indicators to management.
  • Conduct financial analyses and generate reports including KPIs, ROI, cash flow, and ad-hoc analyses to inform capital investments, debt analysis, pricing strategies, and contract negotiations.
  • Oversee and manage all financial operations for organizational units, ensuring accurate financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and timely submission of grant financial reports.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to reconcile contributions and financials related to resource development; maintain and generate essential reports through donor, financial, and member tracking software.
  • Supervise accounting, financial support and technology staff, including managing outsourced technology and finance, conducting performance reviews, team meetings, and ensuring effective departmental structure.
  • Ensure organizational technology and software systems are current, secure, properly maintained, and routinely backed up.
