Position Summary:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of Niginan Housing Ventures’ executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing all financial operations and ensuring long-term organizational sustainability. The CFO will provide strategic financial direction, manage risk, ensure compliance, and deliver accurate and timely financial reporting to the CEO and Board of Directors. This role will also lead the finance team, support grant management, steward capital and housing-related financial projects, and conduct in-depth financial analysis to address past challenges and guide future growth.
Key Responsibilities

  1. Leadership of Finance Department
  • Provide direction and mentorship to the finance team, ensuring effective day-to-day operations and a culture of accountability.
  • Foster capacity building, training, and mentorship to strengthen internal financial knowledge across departments.
  1. Financial Strategy & Planning
  • Lead financial forecasting, analysis, and budgeting processes.
  • Develop and implement strategies to support organizational growth and sustainability.
  • Build multi-year financial models that anticipate growth, capital projects, and evolving funding structures.
  1. Financial Analysis – Past Issues & Future Growth
  • Conduct deep-dive analyses into past financial challenges, including deficits and contract overspending, to identify root causes and corrective actions.
  • Develop financial recovery plans in collaboration with leadership, including cost containment and revenue recovery strategies.
  • Create forward-looking financial models that position the organization for stability and growth.
  • Provide scenario planning and risk assessments to guide decision-making.
  1. Financial Oversight & Reporting
  • Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Present financial reports, variance analyses, and projections to the CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Ensure transparent reporting for both internal and external stakeholders.
  1. Risk Management & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with funding agreements, government regulations, and internal controls.
  • Oversee annual audits and liaise with external auditors.
  • Develop and strengthen financial policies to mitigate risk and increase accountability.
  1. Funding, Fundraising & Grant Management
  • Ensure financial coding and reporting meet all contractual obligations.
  • Support grant applications with accurate financial data and sustainability projections.
  • Partner with program leads to align financial reporting with operational outcomes.
  1. Capital & Asset Management
  • Oversee financing for capital projects and housing initiatives.
  • Maintain strong relationships with banks, auditors, and funding partners.
  • Ensure long-term planning for housing assets and infrastructure.
  1. Board & Stakeholder Relations
  • Serve as the key financial advisor to the CEO and Board.
  • Communicate complex financial information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
  • Build strong, transparent relationships with funders and community partners.

Qualifications and Experience

  • CPA designation required (CA, CMA, CGA, or equivalent).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (Master’s degree an asset).
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive senior financial leadership experience, ideally in non-profit or housing-related organizations.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial recovery planning and long-term forecasting.
  • Experience with risk management, audits, and strategic financial planning.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, and financial management software.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations or communities is an asset.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $100,000.00-$140,000.00 per year
