Coastal Transport Limited manages the operation and maintenance of the ferries operating between Grand Manan, White Head and Deer Islands on behalf of the province of New Brunswick. The work we do is essential in maintaining transportation requirements for the island communities and helps improve the everyday lives of New Brunswickers.

You are a dynamic team player with strong leadership skills and experience participating with and building high performing teams and working well with another shift. As the Officer in Training, you will have the credentials, reputation, experience and confidence to work together with all departments on board, head office, service representatives and regulatory personnel.
Your leadership, attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of qualification. Coastal Transport Limited is looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Marine Emergency Duties (MED), Minimum Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS)
  • Valid Marine Medical;
  • Experience working as a Deckhand; and
  • Experience using computerized ship preventive maintenance systems.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master 150 gross tonnage, Domestic or Limited Master for a Vessel of 60 gross tonnage of more;
  • Chief Mate 150 Gross tonnage, Domestic or Chief Mate Limited for a vessel of 60 Gross tonnage or more;
  • Leadership attributes leading a team during daily operations;
  • Excellent management skills;
  • Experience with Bridge Watchkeeping procedures and operation of navigation equipment;
  • Detailed knowledge of ISM code, Canada Labour Code and Marine Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (MOSH)

    · This is a full-time position based on 4 days on 2 days off or 2-5 days on 2-5 days off depending on the vessel in which you are employed;
    · Due to the ferry remaining nightly in Deer Island, the ideal candidate would need to reside in Deer Island or be willing to stay at the Coastal Transport Limited accommodations during the shift. Preference will be given to applicants who live in New Brunswick due to the shifts.

The primary functions of the Deck Department and the Officer in Training include ensuring the safe and efficient vessel operations which include but are not limited to:
- Navigation practices and Bridge Watchkeeping;
- Look-out duties and responsibilities;
- Docking and Undocking;
- Loading and Off Loading of vehicles and passengers;
- Safety, Security and Fire Patrols;
- Preventative and Corrective Maintenance;
- Administration operations;
- Vessel Emergency duties;
- Support to Operations, Passenger Services and Engineering;
- Ship’s Husbandry and Cleanliness;
- Seamanship skills and duties;
- Training and progressing toward higher level qualifications and certifications;
- All other duties and responsibilities assigned to you as directed by Captain, Mate, Engineer and/or Head Office;
