Position Summary The Chief of Staff (CoS) serves as a trusted strategic partner to the Executive Director and senior leadership team, ensuring organizational priorities are aligned, initiatives are executed effectively, and internal operations support Janus’s mission and values. This role blends strategy, project management, communications, and cross-functional leadership to increase organizational effectiveness and capacity. The Chief of Staff acts as a force multiplier for the Executive Director—supporting decision-making, driving key initiatives, strengthening internal systems, and serving as a connector across departments, the Board of Directors, and external stakeholders. Key Responsibilities Strategic Planning & Execution · Partner with the Executive Director to translate organizational strategy into clear priorities, goals, and execution plans. · Lead and manage cross-functional strategic initiatives and special projects from conception through completion. · Track progress on organizational goals and key performance indicators; prepare dashboards, reports, and recommendations. · Support annual planning, goal setting, and alignment across departments. Executive Support & Governance · Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Director on organizational challenges, opportunities, and change management. · Prepare briefing materials, presentations, and talking points for internal and external engagements. · Support Board of Directors operations, including agenda development, materials preparation, follow-up on action items, and governance best practices. · Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between the Executive Director, Board, and leadership team. Organizational Effectiveness & Operations · Assess and improve internal systems, workflows, and decision-making processes to enhance efficiency and accountability. · Support leadership team meetings, retreats, and organizational communications. · Drive follow-through on leadership decisions and ensure clarity of roles, responsibilities, and timelines. · Partner with People & Culture, Finance, and Program leaders to ensure operational alignment and compliance. Communications & Stakeholder Engagement · Support internal communications to promote transparency, alignment, and a strong organizational culture. · Coordinate messaging and materials for funders, community partners, and key external stakeholders as needed. · Represent Janus in cross-sector meetings or initiatives at the direction of the Executive Director. Equity, Culture & Change Leadership · Champion Janus’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed practices in internal operations and leadership processes. · Support organizational change initiatives, including growth, restructuring, or systems transformation. · Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. Requirements Qualifications Required · Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. · 7+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit management, public sector, or mission-driven organizations. · Demonstrated success leading complex projects and cross-functional initiatives. · Exceptional organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. · Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing executive- and board-level materials. · High degree of professionalism, discretion, and emotional intelligence.
