JOB DESCRIPTION – MAINTENANCE CHIEF ENGINEER
Position Title: Maintenance Chief Engineer
Reports To: General Manager
Location: Coldterra Supply Chain, Ltd, Hamilton, Ontario
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
· Oversee the safe operation and maintenance of refrigeration systems (ammonia and/or Freon), boilers (if applicable), cooling towers, HVAC, air compressors, and related utilities in compliance with TSSA
· Supervise shift engineers and maintenance staff, ensuring accurate logbook entries, regulatory reporting, and adherence to inspection requirements.
· Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance programs to ensure equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and optimize energy efficiency.
· Ensure compliance with Ontario health and safety legislation, WHMIS, ESA, and workplace environmental standards.
· Work with vendors, service providers, and contractors to ensure all work is performed to safety and industry standards.
· Provide technical expertise and input into facility upgrades, expansions, and capital projects.
· Collaborate with senior management in budget planning and cost control related to utilities, maintenance, and capital projects.
· Lead and participate in workplace safety initiatives, including the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
· Support Coldterra’s commitment to food safety, cold chain integrity, and service reliability for clients.
· Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and compliance certifications.
· Other duties and projects as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES
· Valid 2nd Class Operating Engineer Certificate (TSSA requirement).
· Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a chief or supervisory role within a refrigeration/cold storage, food plant or related environment.
· Strong knowledge of refrigeration systems (ammonia, glycol, Freon), compressors, pumps, HVAC, and electrical controls.
· Working knowledge of PLC, HMI, and automation systems (asset).
· Experience Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), software implementation is an asset
· Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
· Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and work effectively in a fast-paced cold storage environment.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with regulatory bodies, contractors, and internal teams.
