Description:
We are looking to appoint a skilled technician who will be based in the Mechanics, Materials and Design Division at the Department of Engineering’s site in Central Cambridge. Reporting to the Divisional Laboratory manager, you will support laboratory and production activities across several labs within the Division, including mechanical engineering, superconductivity and materials.
You will work closely with the other technicians within the Division to provide technical support across a broad range of teaching and research areas. As part of this service, you will be required to give guidance, specialist advice and support on designing, commissioning, upgrading and using mechanical engineering equipment to students and staff who use the mechanics labs to conduct research and teaching. The role also involves assisting with undergraduate teaching, in particular working with undergraduate project students in their third and fourth years.
The successful applicant will have a qualification equitable to HND/HNCC, level 4/5, vocational qualifications or an equivalent level of practical experience. You should also possess excellent communication and IT skills with a working knowledge of relevant regulations and good practice. Practical experience of lab technician general engineering research and teaching work is essential for this role, together with the ability to work to a high degree of precision and accuracy in the manufacture of mechanical parts. Experience of providing training to groups and individuals would also be desirable as well as experience in manual machining and the use of workshop tooling.
