CHIEF UNDERWRITING OFFICER (CUO) – COMMERCIAL PROPERTY INSURANCE START-UP

Our client is a newly formed commercial property insurance carrier (backed by a large international insurance group), specialising in mid-to-large commercial property risks, condo associations, hospitality, and specialty occupancies. They are building a lean, technology-enabled operation that prioritises underwriting discipline, financial strength, and long-term sustainability.
As they grow, they are seeking a hands-on, strategically minded CUO to lead underwriting strategy, shape the company’s risk appetite, and build a disciplined underwriting organisation that delivers profitable, long-term growth.

• Define and implement the underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and portfolio mix.
• Lead all aspects of underwriting operations, including pricing, product design, and risk selection.
• Establish robust underwriting controls, guidelines, and governance frameworks.
• Partner with the CEO and leadership team to drive profitability, efficiency, and sustainable growth.
• Build and manage reinsurance strategies in collaboration with internal and external partners.
• Develop, mentor, and lead a high-performing underwriting team, instilling a culture of accountability and excellence.
• Represent the company with regulators, reinsurers, brokers, and key market stakeholders.
