Job Summary and Requirements
This is to fill one permanent position.
The Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) is Director of the Animal Health Unit and provides leadership and professional guidance to deliver animal health and protection programs for the Yukon government. This position reports to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Environmental Sustainability.
The CVO directs a team of five professional staff to deliver wildlife health surveillance projects, oversee diagnostic laboratory functions and support livestock health services including meat inspection. They contribute significantly to animal health policy and program development. This includes oversight of multiple animal protection programs to enhance responsible ownership and control of companion animals across Yukon.
The selected individual will have authority and responsibilities as CVO under the Yukon’s Animal Health Act and Regulation, Animal Protection and Control Act and Regulations, and the Sheep and Goat Control Order. The CVO is the Yukon’s authoritative expert in animal health and welfare, representing Yukon as spokesperson, and providing ‘response command’ for any disease threat or animal health emergency in the Yukon. As part of a team of Directors within the Department of Environment, they are also responsible for supporting wildlife research and management and ensuring environmentally sustainable agriculture development.

In this position you will lead strategic engagement and senior-level projects, build relationships at all levels, solve problems, provide innovative solutions and promote accountability. The ideal candidate meets responsibilities through motivating, developing and leading a team of veterinarians and technical experts. Essential Qualifications

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the following qualifications. Please note selection for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide on your resume.

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) and eligibility to practice in Yukon;
  • Substantial experience leading animal health programs including managing budgets and work planning;
  • Experience providing strategic advice supporting policy and legislative change;
  • Experience engaging with diverse groups, including industry representatives, and consulting Indigenous governments and representative bodies; and,
  • Experience leading and supervising staff.

Asset Qualifications

  • Post-graduate training to the level of M.Sc., M.V.Sc., D.V.Sc., and/or Ph.D., in a relevant discipline; and,
  • Experience with program evaluation and risk management.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.
