JOB SUMMARY

The Child Care Centre Cook is responsible for the effective and compliant operation of the centre’s kitchen, in accordance with all relevant legislation and regulatory standards, including those established by Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health and the Child Care and Early Years Act. This role includes planning and executing nutritious, allergy-sensitive menus, sourcing groceries and supplies, and preparing daily meals and snacks for the children in care.
Working in close collaboration with the Program Supervisor, the Cook ensures alignment between food service operations and the centre’s programming needs. The Cook may also provide support within the child care program and engage directly with children, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in food preparation and service (in Childcare preferred)
  • Valid Food Handler Certification.
  • Experience working with children is considered an asset.
  • A recent Vulnerable Sector Check is required (within previous 5 months of hire)
  • Must be 18 years of age or older to meet licensing requirements.
  • Completed up-to-date immunization record (TDaP, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B), as mandated by legislation.
  • CPR-C and Standard First Aid certification must be current.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Ability to operate standard kitchen appliances and laundry equipment.
  • Familiarity with Canada’s Food Guide and general principles of child nutrition.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with children, families, coworkers, and other professionals.
  • Physical ability to kneel, bend, lift, and stand for extended periods.
  • Moderate level of physical activity required on a regular basis, including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, carrying, and reaching.
  • Genuine interest in supporting children’s health and well-being through nutritious meals.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and serve meals and snacks in accordance with established menus, accommodating all dietary needs and restrictions.
  • Participate in menu planning and food preparation, emphasizing balanced nutrition and child-friendly options.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment, ensuring the safe storage and handling of all food items.
  • Ensure compliance with all food safety regulations and public health guidelines.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive dining atmosphere for children in collaboration with program staff.
  • Monitor food inventory levels and notify management of shortages or supply needs.
  • Assist in training kitchen assistants or staff in proper food handling and safety procedures.
