Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Child Therapist, Day Treatment is a full-time contract position that provides evidence based and informed individual therapeutic interventions and treatment groups, that support children and families, in the daily academic and social functioning of children or youth and their families.
The Child Therapist, Day Treatment provides classroom support and assist students and children transition back into the school system.
Salary range: $58,001 to $67,543 per annum
This position is represented by OPSEU local 567.
This is a full-time contract position until June 30, 2026.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Within a community school setting, plan, organize and implement organization adopted culturally sensitive, evidence based/ informed therapeutic programs for children and youth and their families who have behavioural, social, emotional or psychiatric needs to transition successfully back into appropriate academic settings.
  • Use approved crisis interventions to create and manage the physical environment and respond to volatile (potentially violent) situations to deescalate and manage the crisis.
  • Document an accurate record of services provided in accordance with organizational policies and procedures, to ensure government, accreditation and professional standards are adhered to and legal accountability has been met.
  • Work within the multi-disciplinary team to create goals and treatment recommendations.
  • Be a main point of contact for parents/families, treatment team and community partners.
  • Occasionally organize community outings, support clients in the community/homes, and accompany to appointments/hospital.
  • Provide training and supervision to college students (usually 3rd year) in the Child and Youth care program, to allow them to attain field training in the classroom environment and gain hands on experience to allow them to enter the workforce

The following education, professional memberships and knowledge are a requirement for this role:

  • Community College diploma in Child and Youth Work, (CYW), or Child and Youth Care (CYC)
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of behaviour management principles and crisis management skills.
  • Knowledge and experience facilitating mental health groups.
  • Experience working in a school environment
  • Awareness of the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) in the workplace and within the community being served by the position.
  • An understanding of anti-black racism, anti-oppressive/anti-racism perspective in the context of the social determinants of health.
  • Ability to recognize and identify situations where incidents of imbalance of power and privilege may occur and can result in possible negative impacts
