PROGRAM OUTLINE

The Counselling program provides professional therapy services to individuals, couples, children, youth and
families. We also provide Psycho-educational and Therapeutic groups. Our therapists practice from a
trauma informed and client centered approach that places emphasis on supporting clients where they are
at. Our therapists practice using a variety of therapeutic approaches and receive regular clinical
supervision and ongoing training opportunities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Masters degree in Social Work (or equivalent degrees such as: M.A., MMFT, M.Ed.) is required
  • Post graduation counselling experience with children, youth and adult clients is required
  • Current registration/membership with a relevant professional association or regulatory body isrequired
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Training is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience providing therapy to children, youth, families and individuals using awide range of therapeutic modalities for a variety of presenting concerns is required
  • Specialized knowledge in the area of trauma, trauma-informed approaches and the impacts ofchildhood trauma is required
  • Specific training in the areas of: child development, child psychology, emotion regulation, parent-child attachment relationships and play therapy techniques is preferred
  • Knowledge of community resources is required
  • Demonstrated ability to clinically manage high risk cases involving problem solving and crisis/risk assessment and intervention skills is required
  • Excellent communication skills including writing skills, listening and observation skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a clinical team
  • Active participation in clinical supervision, group supervision, and clinical meetings
  • Possess excellent time management skills, attention to detail and adherence to professional ethical standards and best practices
  • Ability to work one evening per week
  • Demonstration of cultural competency to work effectively and respectfully with people from different cultures and diverse backgrounds, including consideration of how social, historical contexts and imbalance of power have impacted people’s experiences
  • Ability to practice cultural humility; acknowledging oneself as a learner when understanding others’ personal experiences, as well as demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning and self-reflection
Responsibilities
  • Provides therapy to child, youth, and adult clients as well as families that present with a variety ofissues and concerns
  • Assesses for client needs and works collaboratively to establish goals, treatment plan and supportsneeded to achieve those goals
  • Provision of psycho-educational and/or therapeutic groups may be a component of the therapist’srole
  • Performs advocacy work on behalf of the client(s) with other service providers
  • Manages the administrative and clinical responsibilities as required by the clinical model of thedepartment.
