Rainy River Mine
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About The Role
Schedule: Rotation - 14 days in x 14 days off - 12 hour days
Position Reports To: Capital Projects Superintendent / Supervisor
Position Overview
As a member of the New Gold Rainy River Capital Projects team, the Civil Engineering Summer Student is to demonstrate commitment and compliance with the company and industry Health & Safety, Environmental, and Social Responsibility policies and procedures. The successful candidate is expected to take action to ensure that unsafe practices or non-compliant behaviours in themselves or others are addressed to make the workplace safer.
The Civil Engineering Summer Student will report to the Capital Projects Superintendent / Supervisor who will direct work assignments in field and office to assist in the functional areas of Tailings Dam Monitoring and Heavy Civil Earthworks Project Coordination and Construction Survey. The Civil Engineering Summer Student will work from the Construction Office in a multi-disciplinary open office team environment.
Field and office assignments will include tailings dam inspection, collection of geotechnical data (including piezometer, settlement plates, and slope inclinometers), construction survey layout and as-built pick-up, construction project estimating, scheduling, coordination, and quality control inspection, administration, and reporting, as well as other duties as required. Field work may occur in all weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Strong commitment and adherence to all Health & Safety Policies and Procedures.
Demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to learn cross-functional department areas.
Work with a variety of industry professionals across construction and technical disciplines.
Conduct tailings dam inspections with the Tailings Dam Technician or Engineer.
Conduct regular piezometer, settlement plate, slope inclinometer, water level readings, and other survey and GPS field work readings, inputting and administering data, and reporting.
Conduct construction survey layout and as-built survey data collection.
Assist in construction project estimating, scheduling, coordination, and quality control.
Assist in department administration and reporting as required.
Qualifications
Valid driver’s License
Must be currently enrolled in an engineering program at a recognized Canadian University. Civil, Mining, or Mechanical programs are preferred but are not required for consideration.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong ability to self-motivate and self-learn.
Strong computer-based skills (Microsoft suite and others).
Able to change and re-prioritize tasks as new information is gathered.
Able to work independently or collaborate within groups.
Experience in construction environments including heavy civil earthworks or mining industrial sites is considered an asset but is not required for consideration.
