Incumbent serves as Civil Process Server/Deputy for the Jail, responsible for serving legal documents and warrants. DUTIES: Collects, reviews and serves various legal documents in a timely manner, including summonses, evictions, court orders to appear, grand jury subpoenas, and notices of hearings. Delivers returned documents to appropriate individuals/departments as required. Periodically enters related data on computer. Maintains log of papers served, including completing and submitting monthly reports. Posts legal notices of Sheriff's sale and issues copies of notices to relevant property owners. Maintains appearance and serviceability of all issued and/or required vehicles, equipment, and weapons. Periodically performs duties of Deputy as needed. Performs related duties as assigned. Requirements I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK: High School Diploma or GED. Possession of or ability to obtain certification as a Law Enforcement Officer from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy within time period specified by department. Ability to meet all departmental hiring and retention requirements, including not posing a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace. Ability to qualify by obtaining a passing score in the Handgun Course of Fire, as required by the standards of the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board. Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of customary practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the department, and County justice systems. Working knowledge of and ability to use and properly maintain assigned department vehicles and weapons. Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to enter data on computer. Ability to maintain confidentiality of department information and reports as required. Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including sitting/driving for long periods, standing/walking for long periods, sitting and walking at will, walking up/down flights of stairs, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, reaching, close and far vision, color/ depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objects. Ability to deal swiftly, rationally and decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations, de-escalate volatile situations by means of conversation/negotiation, and use physical force as situations demand. Ability to effectively listen, comprehend and communicate with the co-workers, court personnel, attorneys, jurors, jail inmates, and the public by radio, telephone, in person or in writing, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to occasionally work weekend, evening, and extended hours. Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record. II. RESPONSIBILITY: Incumbent performs standard, recurring duties according to established department policies and legal procedures, making independent decisions and taking authoritative action in response to situational demands. Errors in decisions or work may result in work delays in other departments/agencies and/or endangerment to self and/or members of the public. III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, court personnel, attorneys, jurors, jail inmates, and members of the public for purposes of exchanging and explaining information and serving court papers. Incumbent's work may involve non-routine problem-solving to gain cooperation of individuals in situations that may jeopardize the safety of the public and/or incumbent. Incumbent reports directly to Captain. IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Incumbent performs duties primarily in an office environment and outdoors/in the field, driving for long periods, standing/walking for long periods, sitting and walking at will, walking up/down flights of stairs, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, reaching, close and far vision, color/depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, handling/grasping/fingering objects, adverse weather conditions, traffic, and exposure to potentially violent/hostile individuals. Incumbent occasionally works extended, weekend and/or evening hours.
