Description

Halifax Independent School celebrated 50 years of “Learning and Loving It” in 2024. It is a child-centred space emphasizing strong relationships and active, experiential learning. We are located in Halifax’s west end, and have approximately 175 students from pre-primary to grade 9.
We are seeking an energetic, child-centred individual to join our team in a full-time position that combines two roles:
Classroom Assistant - This is your primary role. Reporting to the Admin Team, you will serve one of our Elementary class groups. Anticipate working alongside the classroom teacher, preparing spaces and materials, leading planned small group activities with teacher direction, supporting the whole class by encouraging individual engagement as needed, and facilitating effective student transitions throughout the day.
Childcare Coordinator - planning and executing our Extracurricular Childcare Programs (after-school programming and in-service day camps).
Reporting to the Admin team, you will actively contribute to the safety and well-being of the children during lunchtime, after-school, in-service days and day-camp programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with youth - e.g., as a classroom assistant, camp leader; or in childcare, after-school or youth programs.
  • Familiarity working with Google Apps (Sheets and Docs) is an asset.
Responsibilities

Classroom Assistant

Working closely with the classroom teacher, you will:

  • Assist with classroom duties and program implementation, supporting students during much of their class time and with transitions throughout the day.
  • Provide in-class and playground supervision of children
  • As necessary, take part in tasks and activities which contribute to the smooth running of the school

Childcare Program Planning and Delivery

Under the direction of the Headteacher you will:

  • Plan and implement an Afterschool program that includes engaging, multi-age activities (ages 5-12).
  • Plan and execute engaging multi-age programming of day camps including stand-alone single day events and week-long theme-based camps.

Staff and Child Supervision.
In addition to direct supervision of children (age 5-15) and leadership of activities, you will provide supervision to extracurricular childcare staff
