JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Classroom Assistant, Autistic Support assists in carrying out a program consistent with the philosophy of the Program for Students with Exceptionalities and under the direction of the teacher and principal.

EDUCATION REQUIRED

  • 48 College Credits OR High School Diploma and successful completion of a reading and math competency assessment

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

Varies based on the needs of the department

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Experience with children with autism and attending to their personal needs is preferred.
  • First Aid certification/training preferred. Competencies:
  • Performing Administrative Activities: Performing day to day administrative tasks such as maintaining information files and processing paperwork.
  • Technical Proficiency: The ability and willingness to exhibit competency in the technical areas needed to do a specific job.
  • Organizational Ability: The ability and willingness to organize and utilize resources to achieve results.
  • Workflow Management: The ability and willingness to perform work within defined specifications and timelines and to manage conflicting priorities.
  • Stakeholder Relations: The ability and willingness to interact and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Enthusiastic about the fundamental goal of advancing student achievement in an urban public school district.

Responsibilities

The essential functions of this position may include, but are not limited to:
1. Assists in transportation of students.
2. Keeps records and works with bulletin boards.
3. Assists on field trips.
4. Assists in the preparation, maintenance, scheduling, and operation of Special Education equipment and materials.
5. Assists in keeping children clean.
6. Prepares rooms for receiving students and end of day cleanup.
7. Works with students on independent assignments as directed by the teacher.
8. Assists teachers and students in various day to day classroom tasks.
9. Prepares lunch for students and feeds students when necessary.
10. Participates in community based instructional activities.
11. Assists in the physical movement of students when necessary.
12. Changes diapers for male and female students aged 5-21
13. Helps students with toilet needs.
14. Participates in community based instructional activities.
15. Works with Special Education staff (OT, PT, S/L, vision, hearing, and adapted PE etc.)
