WHAT YOUR JOB WILL BE LIKE

We are seeking a motivated R&D Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Identify near- and long-term technical challenges and encourage the innovation necessary to achieve results which have significant impact on national security.
  • Build multidisciplinary technical teams to solve current and emerging problems as defined by customer requirements.
  • Directs systematic study toward a fuller knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts and discovers or synthesizes new approaches to achieve goals.
  • Collaborate with programmatic interfaces/expertise across 5900, engineering teams across Sandia, and with trusted partners at other government agencies to achieve mission results.
  • Use systems engineering principles to implement a multidisciplinary engineering approach to research, design, or develop structures, instruments, machines, experiments, processes, systems, theories, or technologies; to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions as well as eventual mission characteristics and application.
  • Create and apply an analytic framework/system that will cultivate partnerships across multiple government agencies to enable building more symbiotic relationships.
  • Interfaces with the internal and external system customers and those responsible for developing, testing, and implementing the system and its elements.
  • Works with the various subsystem teams to verify and validate complex requirements, often from a combination of analysis, observation, real and simulated environmental testing, and an understanding of essential functional performance needs.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

QUALIFICATIONS WE REQUIRE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS clearance
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a SCI security clearance, which may require a polygraph test

QUALIFICATIONS WE DESIRE

The ideal R&D Systems Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Exceptional technical acumen with proven experience in field testing and integrating knowledge across diverse engineering disciplines.
  • Military operations background or deep understanding of mission environments, providing operational awareness and practical context to technical decisions.
  • Strong systems-level thinker with the ability to intuitively break down complex problems into their component parts, while relying on team collaboration to fill knowledge gaps.
  • Demonstrated agility and adaptability, especially in fast-paced, ambiguous, or evolving environments.
  • Experience presenting to large groups, negotiating technical requirements, and engaging diverse stakeholders.
  • Highly analytical problem solver who can translate customer requirements into clear, actionable, and meaningful engineering tasks.
  • Demonstrates humility, resilience, and clarity under pressure, guided by a strong sense of purpose for mission deliverable and personal integrity
  • Proven project and resource management skills, including managing staffing, budgets, equipment, and lab space for rapid-response efforts.
  • Customer-centric approach with strong experience eliciting, defining, and delivering on technical requirements in partnership with sponsors across government agencies and trusted mission partners.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, able to manage competing priorities across multiple programs and deliver under pressure.

NNSA REQUIREMENTS FOR MEDPEDS

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
