FULL-TIME PROVINCIAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH VETERINARIAN:

In 2022, the Province of Manitoba and Winnipeg Humane Society joined forces to develop a new
One Health Veterinary Outreach Program to serve underserved and remote communities in
Manitoba. This is a unique and rewarding opportunity for an experienced veterinarian to fill a
full-time position as our Provincial Community Outreach Veterinarian. This one-of-a-kind role
will allow you to venture outside a traditional clinic setting and serve the needs of people and pets
through community medicine. This role will inevitably have a huge positive impact on both
human and animal lives throughout Manitoba by providing affordable access to veterinary care
to underserved/remote communities by utilizing a One Health approach. Leading the first ever
One Health Initiative you will use your professional skills and expertise to achieve community
wide wellness and long term, lasting change.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal applicant will have the following:

  • Valid DVM license with the MVMA (or eligible to be licensed)
  • The applicant will need to be prepared to travel outside Winnipeg, within Manitoba up to

This one-of-a-kind position will be dedicated toward supporting and strengthening our existing One
Health Outreach Program, by providing access to veterinary care in underserved and remote
communities in Manitoba as part of our expanding One Health Program in partnership with the
Province of Manitoba. Your responsibilities in supporting and strengthening the One Health

Program will include:

  • Leadership – Provide leadership in the continuing development of a community-based

Veterinary Outreach Program in Manitoba through active engagement and invitation of

key partners.

  • Strategic Planning – Provide support to the development of the strategic framework for

which the Veterinary Outreach Program shall conduct their repeatable and sustainable

approach to increase access to Veterinary Care (i.e. who, what, when, how).

  • Veterinary Medicine - Implementation of the Manitoba Veterinary Outreach Program

beginning with community engagement and followed with implementation of One Health &
Welfare 1) Veterinary Care Program and 2) Veterinary Volunteerism Curriculum Program.
Veterinary clinical duties will include travelling to remote communities in Manitoba year-round and
providing veterinary care including implants, vaccinations, parasite control, and sterilization of
companion animals to promote human health and safety and prevent zoonotic disease
transmission. Based on each communities’ unique needs, you will be able to develop and deliver a
variety of animal related educational programs to strengthen local engagement and promote
animal welfare.
The successful applicant with also provide on-site veterinary services at the Winnipeg Humane
Society’s Winnipeg location to animals from these remote communities as well as provide services
to veterinary outreach wellness clinics, off site within the city of Winnipeg. The successful applicant
will work closely with highly respected partners including, the Director of Clinic Operations, One
Health Coordinator and Grants Specialist, the Community Outreach RVT and other veterinarians,
RVTs, assistants, staff and volunteers at veterinary clinics and at the Winnipeg Humane Society.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal applicant will have the following:

  • Valid DVM license with the MVMA (or eligible to be licensed)
  • The applicant will need to be prepared to travel outside Winnipeg, within Manitoba up to 2

weeks a month.

  • At least 3 years of small animal surgical experience
  • Competency performing high volume spays/neuters
  • Able to perform the Art of Veterinary Medicine in temporary clinic settings that meet PIPS

standards but will not offer all the equipment and comforts available at most typical clinic

settings.

  • Team leadership/management skills
  • A willingness and being physically able to travel outside of Winnipeg up to 2 weeks a

month. Travel will involve driving long distances (some communities are 8-10 hours drive
from Winnipeg) on gravel/winter roads and flying in small planes to remote communities
in Manitoba. Physically able to perform high volume spay/neuter surgeries for a full day

multiple days in a row

  • Valid Manitoba driver’s license
  • Strong community outreach skills
  • Understanding of Reconciliation and Indigenous culture
