Description Shift Type: 4 days per week; 10 hours per shift Summary: The Clinical Coordinator of the operating room will have responsibilities that include assisting in the supervision and management of the operations of the OR on a daily basis. Provide smooth and efficient patient flow within the operating room to assure quality patient care. Additionally, coordination of therapeutic, effective patient/family-centered care according to physician orders, in compliance with the philosophy of the facility, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies is required. Apply knowledge of the nursing process, illness, surgical procedures and anesthesia practice to the patient admissions process. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The duties listed below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees in this position. They are not to be construed as an exclusive list of all job duties performed in this position. The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for maintaining clinical communication and personal knowledge and skills required to meet the challenge of delivering safe and effective patient care. The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for assisting with daily staffing, patient/physician/employee issues in conjunction with the Director of Nursing and Administrator. The Clinical Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating staffing scheduled for assigned areas based on census, coordinates lunches and breaks. Collaborates with the Administrator, nursing and medical staff. Collaborates with outside professional organizations, vendors and other allied health professionals as needed. Serves on assigned committees. Leadership Responsibilities Establish and adjust staff assignments as needed to meet the needs of the center and the volume and acuity of the patients. Identify needs for other staffing, using agency and request personnel as needed. Verify schedules and any changes made from day to day and week to week. Communicate with surgeons and anesthesiologists of any schedules as requested and/or any changes in scheduling. Communicate with staff regarding their schedules and any changes as needed. Maintain consistent communication with SPD, Materials manager to solve any issues that arise. Assist staff on a daily basis as needed to allow breaks and lunches are granted to staff in a timely manner. Maintain and update surgeon preference cards as needed Troubleshoot any issues arising in the OR. Demonstrate mentoring ability with staff and new employees. Assign new employees a nurse preceptor and act as a preceptor as needed. Assist with student assignments when required. Mentors and trains new staff members as needed. Assist DON with operational items as assigned. Maintain a safe environment for staff, patients, physicians and visitors. Monitor staff adherence to policies and procedures. Monitor efficient room turnover. Assists in monthly staff meetings for information sharing in the OR arena Assists with completing staff yearly performance reviews Encourages staff to seek opportunities for patient care improvement Creates a culture of compassion and teamwork Major Duties / Responsibilities Adheres to the Center’s policies and procedures and the Profession Standards of Nursing Practice Assures Patient Safety in the OR and Never Leaves Patient Unattended Verbally confirms with patient, legal guardian or surgeon the identity of the patient and the site of surgery. Ensures that the patient’s name and site of surgery is consistent with the consent form, ID bracelet and document this on the procedure verification checklist. If marking is required, the Circulator is responsible for viewing the mark prior to surgery. Checks for allergies, dentures, jewelry, prosthesis, hairpins, nail polish, wigs, etc. Reassures patient; introduces self and the scrub personnel. Checks the patient's physical comfort. Assures that history and physical and appropriate ordered lab work is on the chart before the patient is anesthetized. An interim history and physical is to be done by the anesthesia provider if there is no history and physical present. Assesses patient's needs in regard to the surgical procedure. Assesses patient's needs as to transportation from the pre-op area to the OR. Maintains professional decorum within the OR. Has A Thorough Working Knowledge Of Emergency supplies and equipment. All surgical equipment and supplies. Aseptic technique. Current trends in legal implications of surgery and how they apply to each surgical team member. Local Case Procedure Follows same procedure as above. Assures patient needs are met in the OR. Reviews patient vital signs recorded operatively. Monitors vital signs during the procedure, and documents on the OR. Transports patient to the PACU post procedure. General, Spinal or MAC Procedure Assists in positioning patient Assures patient privacy, closes OR doors. Assists anesthesia provider as needed. Prep Follows preference card as to prep solution noting patient allergies. Follows surgical prep procedure. Duties During Case Performs a “TIME OUT” for final verbal verification of the patient identity, correct site and procedure prior to the start of the case. Pours solutions for scrub personnel. Opens surgical supplies. Keeps room organized during case, assuring appropriate containment of sponges. Obtains and removes equipment as needed. Assures correct surgical counts. Notes any breaks in technique. Anticipates the needs of the scrub nurse and keeps him/her supplied with needed materials. Maintains a clean environment outside of the sterile field. Protects the privacy, confidentiality, and security of personal health information. Record Keeping Maintains an accurate, precise, and legible medical record of the surgery performed. Documents all drains, packs, medications, and staff involved on the operative record. Assures completeness of pathology requests and appropriate specimen handling. Completes flow sheet as required for room time and surgery time. During local cases, maintains a record of the patient’s vital signs, assures OR record is complete with notation of medications given. Transferring Patient to PACU Prepares patient for transfer. Removes all grounding pads, dispersive electrodes. Positions stretcher or patient recliner, for safety and comfort of the patient, locks wheels. Transfers patient safely with use of mechanical aids as indicated. Assure patient has clean gown and warm blanket upon transfer. Provides report to PACU nurse upon arrival to the PACU. Returns to OR to assist with turn over. Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and / or Experience: Minimum one year leadership or supervisory experience required. Three years perioperative or surgery center experience preferred. Current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Illinois. Graduate of an accredited nursing institution, preferred. BLS or ACLS certification. Five CEU’s per year in the field of Perioperative setting or Management preferred. Orthopedic surgery experience is a plus.
