JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Educator will assess, plan/develop, implement and evaluate learning/resource needs related to orientation and continuing education needs. Coordinates, develops and presents educational programs designed to maintain, enhance and assess job performance and competencies for Nursing Service employees. Supports patient education initiatives as appropriate. Conducts observations in form of “work with” of staff to maintain knowledge of positions and assess needs of staff and/or unit. Participates in evaluation process by documenting performance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Heavy Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs with a maximum lifting of 100 lbs.
Demonstrated knowledge of staff development and program development. Effectiveinterpersonal communication skills in order to effectively collaborate with physicians, and instruct patients and their families.

Responsibilities

Assessment
Assesses learner needs and identifies training goals and outcomes. Participates in review of activities or processes for area of responsibility and makes recommendations for improvement. Researches and recommends the purchase of educational materials and equipment. Identifies and recruits internal and external resources (nurse, doctor, other specialists or vendors) for educational activities. Participation in committees, work groups and/or projects is also used to assess the need for educational activities. Collaborates with hospital leadership and staff to assess the learning needs and competency gaps. Conducts needs assessment using a variety of strategic tools. Informs Director of concerns regarding new orientee’s performance.
Planning and Design
Facilitates a variety of learning experiences using a range of instructional methods. Teaches content as needed and/or assigned within clinical expertise to facilitate orientation, staff development and/or safe practice. Provides educational opportunities that benefit staff at all stages of their career development. Makes recommendations for remediation based on orientee’s performance assessment. Supports staff development with educational activities (which include remediation, certification, mentoring, DNV requirements, product roll-outs, etc.). Delivers competence based programs for nursing staff which includes demonstrated improvement of skills and retention of knowledge. Facilitates the adult learning process, creating a climate which supports learning across the health system. Creates a learning climate that is not threatening or intimidating as evidenced by classroom interaction and student feedback. Coordinates and maintains the continuity and integrity of orientation programs.
Implementation and Delivery
Encourages and facilitates staff members and physicians to present in- services of their choice thus making the education of the staff a team effort. Develops own curriculum for in-services using adult learning techniques. Materials are well developed and organized. Delivers/presents in-services and education. Coordinates activities when utilizing external resource to conducts in- services and education programs. Ensures attendance is appropriate and follows up when staff members miss education.
Evaluation
Evaluates the effectiveness of educational programming and delivery. Evaluate content and teaching strategies appropriate for learner needs. Ensures that educational programs are congruent with organizational missions, values, and goals. Evaluates unit orientation progress of new or transfer employee. Evaluates preceptors and makes recommendations for change as appropriate. Coaches’ preceptors. Utilizes a variety of methods, measurements, observation to evaluate achievement of learning goals.
Personal Development and Growth
Maintains strong knowledge of current healthcare practice, policy and regulations and incorporates evidence-based practice into training design and development. Serves as a consultant for staff in areas of program development, clinical policies and practice and professional development. Facilitates teambuilding and leadership for areas of responsibility. Models and promotes the concept of life-long learning. Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Serves as an educational consultant to facilities, task forces, committees, and projects relating to policy, procedure and educational program development. Serves as a member of committees
Performs Other Duties as Required
Maintains accurate and timely education files for personnel on assigned unit. Submits reports and projects on time. Promotes a safe and healthy work environment by reminding or coaching others, including peers, when behaviors are noncompliant. Performs other duties as assigned.
