Do you have the skills to support patients in addressing their long-term health challenges including de-conditioning, and supporting individuals on their journey in returning to active living?
UHCW NHS Trust is looking to a Clinical Exercise Physiologist to join our Inpatient Therapy Department, based within the Medicine team working alongside Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Therapy Technicians. The Medicine team supports patients with the following specialities: Renal, Endocrinology, Respiratory, Infectious Diseases, Cardiology, Oncology & Haematology, General Acute Medicine. This role will primarily sit within the Renal and Endocrinology Wards, with the potential to develop into the other speciality areas.
As this is a new role, the post holder would be integral to service development, and demonstrating the benefits of diversifying our rehabilitation offer within Inpatient Therapies.
UHCW NHS Trust is the regional centre for Nephrology and Transplantation for Coventry and Warwickshire. We cover up to one million patients and provide a comprehensive renal service; including all types of dialysis - for AKI , Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and End-stage Renal Failure (ESRF) - and both deceased donor and living transplantation.
You will have a 4 week supernumerary programme which will support your induction into the Trust and wider Therapies teams.
The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team developing, establishing and evaluating this new service in conjunction with the medicine therapy team and the wider MDT.
The postholder will promote the role exercise can have supporting patients within the medicine footprint, drawing on experiences and knowledge of exercise prescription in other clinical populations. They will support the delivery of personalised exercise training interventions, addressing maladaptation’s associated with the condition and extended periods of bed rest i.e. decline in cardiorespiratory fitness and functional mobility, altered body composition, increased risk of sarcopenia and poor quality of life.
The post holder will manage a caseload of patients with complex needs, using evidence-based practice, shared decision making and client-centred principles, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in a defined clinical setting.
The post holder will participate in the planning, development and evaluation of clinical practice and service development in the defined clinical setting.
The post holder will ensure development of staff and students through supervision, training, and appraisal.

1. Ability to undertake a clinical assessment (as an autonomous specialist) of patients with long term conditions, including those with complex presentation, investigate & analyse skills & formulate individualised management & treatment plans to formulate specialised programmes of care.
2. To analyse and interpret highly complex clinical information associated with relevant medical conditions and to identify and respond appropriately to additional long-term conditions and/or co-morbidities and the potential effect these may have on physical activity and lifestyle advice.
3. Conduct functional assessments eg; 6-minute walk tests, sub-maximal cycle ergometer assessments, chester step test, hand grip strength, short physical performance battery test. Use this information appropriately prior to advising, planning and delivering personalised exercise training treatment plans.
4. Accept clinical responsibility for own caseload & organise this effectively & efficiently with regard to the clinical progress the patient. Responsible for recognising the need to and adjusting programmes to accommodate for post-surgical wounds, and medical attachments e.g. catheters and drains.
5. Prepare audit reports on quality assurance and service performance and present in a professional form to managers and other stakeholders.
6. Collaborate with long-term condition specialists and all members of the multidisciplinary team in the primary and secondary health care settings to ensure patients are receiving the highest quality of care.
