Successful applicants will benefit from the Unit’s extensive teaching programme and the excellent clinical experience on offer.
All candidates must be eligible for full GMC registration.

The Obstetric department provides a referral service to the Network for Fetal Diagnostic and Materno-Fetal medicine and has an established reputation in the early identification and management of high-risk pregnancies.
Intensive Care – ST1 – 3 trainees are directly supervised by the middle grade doctors and consultants. Practical procedures are taught. Routine blood samples are obtained by a phlebotomy service on SCBU. The extended role of the nurses is under consideration.
Post-natal and labour wards - ST1 -3 trainees are responsible for new born examinations (NIPE) and care of infants on the transitional care ward under the supervision of middle grade doctors. They will be accompanied to the delivery suite for all high risk deliveries until competent at resuscitation. There are also Midwives trained in NIPE who assist with the newborn checks.
Out-Patients – ST1-3 trainees attend as observers the weekly general follow up clinic and fortnightly development assessment clinic. A visiting paediatric cardiologist holds a regular clinic at which the trainee can attend.
Training offered - the training is focused to Part II of the MRCPCH but will be designed to suit the individual needs of candidates who are pursuing other careers. Candidates will get wide ranging experience of neonatal medicine and get a good understanding of mechanical ventilation of neonates. Candidates will also develop their practical skills by performing various procedures under supervision. Training covers all aspects of neonatology with additional emphasis on research topics and audit. There is a daily ward round led by the attending consultant, but candidates are encouraged to formulate management plans for the babies on the unit.
Clinical Audit
Homerton Hospital has a quality team for clinical audit. The post holder will be expected to participate in the Directorate’s clinical audit, and in the bi-monthly unit medical and nursing audit meeting.
