JOB SUMMARY

This a remote-first position that is eligible for remote and/or flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment.
Located within the UMH Quality Department, Clinical Quality Reporting (CQR) houses data abstraction for a growing number of UMH projects including CMS/TJC core measures, BCBS Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQIs), and select pediatric registries. The broad range of experience possessed by our staff, coupled with the positive experiences of our customers, continues to drive our expansion as new customers seek our services.

With minimal direction, the Clinical Information Analyst Senior functions as part of the Clinical Quality Reporting team (CQR) and is responsible for gathering clinical patient-level data to meet mandatory reporting requirements specific to assigned projects including, but not limited to, the following:

  • The Joint Commission (TJC)
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), including:
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) programs
  • Physician Organization of Michigan Accountable Care Organization (POM ACO)
  • Pediatric Acute Care Cardiology Collaborative (PAC3)
  • Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium Registry (PC4)
  • Children’s Hospitals Neonatal Consortium (CHNC)
  • Vermont Oxford Network (VON)
  • Other programs and/or registries as assigned.

This is a senior level position with possible intermediate level entry that reports to the Manager of CQR. The primary responsibilities of this position are to perform accurate and timely abstraction for their assigned area of responsibility, creating standard and ad hoc reports for stakeholders, medical, nursing, and quality leadership. The candidate collaborates directly with health system leaders, care providers, and members of multidisciplinary teams to improve the quality of patient care by providing clinical expertise and knowledge of clinical quality indicators, processes, and outcomes. This role also provides consultation services and provides recommendations for performance improvement and quality initiatives.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - SENIOR LEVEL:

  • At least 5 years of clinical bedside experience in a diverse healthcare setting
  • Extensive experience with clinical data abstraction and reporting.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - INTERMEDIATE LEVEL:

  • 3 or more years of clinical bedside experience in a diverse healthcare setting.
  • Some experience with clinical data abstraction and reporting.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - BOTH SENIOR AND INTERMEDIATE LEVELS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or other applicable degree
  • Reliably attend virtual meetings.
  • With adequate notice, attend occasional in-person meetings in the Ann Arbor area
  • Demonstrated knowledge of clinical quality, (e.g., best practice alerts, clinical guideline development, other clinical quality improvement).
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with data management tools, computers, data abstraction, and analysis (e.g. Excel, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform in a self-directed manner within a team-focused framework.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines in a fast paced and changing environment with multiple competing tasks and priorities.
  • Knowledge of Michigan Medicine EMR system or another EPIC organization’s system.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • A Master’s degree in an applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience interacting with a variety of clinical disciplines and specialties.
  • Experience with TJC and CMS mandated reporting requirements.
  • Experience addressing challenges and pressures facing all provider levels.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of process improvement.

  • Performs timely and accurate abstraction and validation of clinical quality measures, as assigned, utilizing clinical judgment and knowledge in understanding of specifications and definitions related to appropriate patient populations and projects to meet requirements.
  • Conducts regular review of data for quality assurance and to assess trends and identify areas for improvement and possible action.

  • Synthesizes and analyzes large quantities of data and information to create succinct communications that influence decision-making and inform broad audiences. Prepares reports based on measures of process and outcomes of care. Works with physicians, nurses and other clinicians to develop strategies to improve performance.
  • Develops and presents both high-level and detailed reports, as needed, identifying opportunities for improvement and recommendations for next steps. Facilitates development of innovative approaches to visual metrics (e.g., dashboards) that assist teams with ongoing improvement.
  • Provides clinical expertise and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to recommend improvement opportunities, action plans, and implementation processes, including related education and follow-up in various department, unit, and/or project-specific meetings.

  • Works closely with Quality Analytics and H.I.T.S. to implement electronic file support of clinical data to reduce the burden of manual data abstraction, analysis, and reporting.
