The Clinical Laboratory Technologist – Histology will process requests and receive specimens in the laboratory. Prepares tissues for microscopic review; performs frozen specimen sectioning, if necessary with appropriate training; grosses small specimens; embeds blocks, cuts slides, stains slides with special stains, including immunohistochemistry; accessions, processes, and routes laboratory testing material to the appropriate testing area; transcribes, prints, sorts, mails, and faxes laboratory reports; handles requests for laboratory reports, specimen tracking, and laboratory requests via phone, email, mail, and other correspondence methods; assists with the performance of laboratory quality control, equipment maintenance, and quality assurance activities; maintains laboratory supply inventories and processes requests for supply orders; training of new employees. Performs other duties as assigned. Responsibilities: Read, understand, and comply with Laboratory and RPCI Oncology PC policies, protocols, and procedures (e.g., Procedure, Quality Assurance Manuals, Safety and Compliance Policies, and Employee Handbooks), and ensure that all staff members follow instructions. Correctly logs all patient and specimen Maintains an adequate inventory of laboratory supplies. Shares appropriate communication with other personnel Assists other laboratory personnel when necessary Data entry and processing specimens, including labeling, accessioning, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order. Package testing material for delivery when necessary to the appropriate internal and external testing laboratory, ensuring compliance with required HIPAA and de-identification requirements; package diagnostic specimens for external shipment in accordance with regulatory shipping requirements. Ability to provide quality, error-free work in a fast-paced environment. Flexible and available based on staffing needs. Performs and documents preventive maintenance and documents Quality Controls and remedial action when needed. Handles pathology/laboratory specimens utilizing appropriate blood/body fluid precautions Performs immediate laboratory specimen processing, including measurement, aliquoting, and appropriate temperature storage. Performs gross dissection of small tissue and biopsy specimens with appropriate training and oversight by Pathologist(s). Retrieves tissue from the gross station after it has been cut; loads and starts tissue processor; unloads and flushes tissue processors; records numbers of blooks processed; embeds tissues into paraffin blocks; cuts blooks using microtome to make slides; stains slides manually or on automated stainer. Cuts slides from paraffin blocks and uses special procedures, including tinctorial and immunochemistry stains, as requested and available in the lab. Processes all the correct documentation for Send-Out specimens. Ability to resolve interdepartmental issues professionally while prioritizing patient needs. Assists in the training and educating employees/ students to explain and demonstrate standard operating procedures. Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs. Provide input to enhance standard operation procedures. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Files and removes laboratory testing material from physical inventory locations; maintains the integrity of the physical/electronic inventory for retrieval and chain of custody of stored material. Perform frozen specimen sectioning with appropriate training, including Mohs sections, if necessary. Assists other laboratory personnel when necessary. Requirements Education/Experience: License to practice as a certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York; or Eligible for licensure as a certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York. The preferred candidate will have experience with standard Histology procedures, special stains, IHC's and other relevant experience/skills.
