JOB SUMMARY:

The Educator collaborates across programs, utilizes evidence-informed practice and education theory, models, program/curriculum development and evaluation; promotes and models client centered care, supports the development of quality education activities; and delivers formal group or individual educational activities to staff that will achieve the most effective outcomes. Measures education plan success and amends plans accordingly. The Educator participates in research, policy, quality improvement, and risk management activities. The Educator promotes education practices that are consistent with established policies, standards and strategic directions of BCEHS.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training and Experience

• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
• Two years of recent related clinical experience in the designated clinical area, including one year in an educational or leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Completion of the Instructional Skills Workshop or Adult Education Equivalent. The Employer will equally consider an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

1. Supports the 24/7 contact center by providing direct clinical instruction to new and existing staff as required, and facilitates learning by coaching and role modeling telenursing practice to staff.
2. In collaboration with the Team Manager, will develop individual learning plans for nurses with identified practice concerns, and will provide the necessary support and training required to meet the objectives of the plan. Identifies learning needs for the development of formal/informal learning activities and provide real time support and education as needed.
3. Promotes skill development, assesses telenurse work, including documentation practices, and provides feedback to ensure care is provided according to standards and clinical practice guidelines.
4. Responsible for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of Nursing Services programs, including orientation training, educational support and continuing education, by using educational/curriculum theory and knowledge of specialized clinical practice in collaboration with Team Managers and other stakeholders.
5. Develops, reviews, and modifies learning resources and clinical practice reference documents, and using established educational standards, determines match between content and delivery method and providing feedback to all stakeholders to ensure resources are current, relevant, cost effective and coordinated.
6. Facilitates learning by coaching and acting as a clinical resource and demonstrates expertise and leadership in nursing practice through methods such as reviewing literature and developments in technology and equipment, consulting with community experts, evaluating clinical practice systems/standards, identifying new theories/trends/education programs, developing new/revised standards and presenting educational sessions based upon specialized body of knowledge to enhance quality client care.
7. Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical education programs, activities and resources by analyzing learning outcomes using program/resource evaluation, learner behaviours, utilization statistics, and reviewing feedback to determine opportunities for quality improvement.
8. In collaboration with Quality Management Coordinators, participates in quality improvement and risk management activities through methods such as evaluating effect of changes in client care practice, generating recommendations for alternative approaches, providing education to staff as a result of practice assessments and monthly reports, and recommending changes to selected processes or protocols; drafts new and/or revised procedures, standards and criteria for the program in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team. Initiates strategies to improve client care using principles of continuous quality improvement to promote delivery of high quality educational services.
9. Participates in groups as a clinical education resource person by providing input and suggestions related to education implications and group processes of new initiatives to ensure that clinical educational needs are addressed. Documents educational process and utilization statistics by maintaining database and records, and by providing written and verbal reports to demonstrate accountability and to continuously improve the quality of clinical education services.
10. Provides consultation to staff regarding professional development, clinical education by maintaining interpersonal contact and observation, providing verbal and written feedback for the individual to continue competency development, meeting with team members on a one-to-one basis and recommending educational programs/resources and facilitating development of learning and/or professional growth plans with new staff.
11. Contributes to nurse performance planning and review by assessing telenurse performance, including nurses in orientation and probation, and communicates findings to the Team Manager. Acts as preceptor, as needed, to new hires; provides 1:1 support, coaching and recommending approaches for improvement, and communicates findings to the Team Manager. Collaborates with Work Force Coordinators and Team Managers in planning preceptor assignments and educational events.
12. Participates in approved nursing and interdisciplinary research and special projects through methods such as identifying research topics/issues, promoting staff awareness and involvement in research activities, supporting evidence-based nursing practice and gathering and summarizing data to improve education and clinical effectiveness.
13. Provides recommendations into recruitment and retention strategies and continuing education initiatives for staff, based on training experience, observations and feedback.
14. Maintains clinical competency and call-taking eligibility, as determined by the Nursing Services management team. Supports consistency in feedback by participating in call analysis meetings with other stakeholders. Identifies and recommends enhancements for the efficient use of call taking processes.
