LEARNING AND EDUCATION

In conjunction with the CNM 2, provide professional and personal development opportunities for all nursing and support staff working with the relevant Learning and Education specialists to develop an appropriate programme of learning and education based on a planned (individual, department and organisation) training needs assessment.
Contribute to the requirements of NMBI for the practice of professional nursing are met and upheld including the development of an expanded scope of nursing practice.
Maintain accurate records of all study leave and education resources used.
Implement an enhanced staff competence assessment relevant to the Unit/Ward.
In conjunction with the CNM 2, facilitate study days and leave for nurses and support staff, in accordance with the BHHC Study Leave Policy and within budgeted allowances.

EXPERIENCE

Be registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by NMBI
Have at least five years recent relevant post-registration nursing experience (full-time or equivalent hours part-time) in an acute hospital setting and a minimum of two years nursing experience in Day of Surgery Admissions, Pre Assessment Clinic or Anaesthetic Nursing.
Have a recognised post-registration nursing course - Higher Diploma or Post Grad course, in Postgraduate qualification in a relevant nursing specialty or management and/or a willingness to undertake same.
Hold an up to date ACLS course or a willingness to undertake same.

Responsibilities

The role is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of Day of Surgery Admissions & Pre Assessment Clinic.
The Day of Surgery Admission (DOSA) Unit is a pre- operative unit where patients are prepared for theatre on the day of their surgery. Operating Monday to Saturday, DOSA cares for patients undergoing surgical procedures across a large number of specialties and provides pre-operative care for patients having major surgery. DOSA strives to make the patient journey to theatre as efficient as possible.
The Pre Assessment Clinic (PAC) is a nurse led unit where patients are assessed pre - operatively to ensure they are optimally fit for their surgery by carrying out a systematic systems review to include documenting an accurate clinical history, medication review, physical examination including but inclusive of Vital Signs, Height, Weight, ECG and the ordering of relevant laboratory/ microbiology/cardiology tests as determined by the pre-assessment history.
As a key member of the frontline management team, the CNM1 will work across both Day of Surgery Admissions & Pre Assessment Clinic and will demonstrate managerial and leadership skills and facilitate effective communication with colleagues in the hospital. The position requires a participative approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.
