The APN functions as a clinical expert within a specialty area, utilizing theory-based and research-based nursing practices. This role involves making independent clinical decisions, integrating knowledge of disease processes, medical treatments, and nursing interventions to improve patient outcomes.
The CNS leads population-based programs of care, designs and evaluates interventions, and serves as a leader, consultant, mentor, and change agent to advance nursing practice. The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to address system-wide problems and enhance patient care across the continuum.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply advanced clinical knowledge within the specialty to improve patient outcomes cost-effectively.
  • Serve as a leader, consultant, and educator to staff, fostering evidence-based practice and quality improvement.
  • Lead multidisciplinary groups to develop innovative solutions addressing system and patient care issues.
  • Recognize and address the behavioral, developmental, cultural, and emotional needs of the populations served.
  • Maintain current knowledge and skills in the specialty area; complete certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Participate in professional organizations and ongoing education to expand expertise.
  • For Oncology CNSs: Attain Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®) certification within 1 year and maintain CEUs aligned with oncology practice.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a master’s or doctorate in nursing.
  • Current Indiana RN license or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
  • Eligibility to practice as an advanced practice nurse in Indiana, including knowledge of relevant statutes, rules, and laws (drug laws, confidentiality, medical records).
  • Demonstrated expertise in nursing practice, validated by 3-5 years of recent relevant experience, especially in oncology if applicable.
  • Certification relevant to the specialty area (e.g., Oncology Nursing Certification – OCN®) within 1 year of hire for Oncology CNSs.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer literacy or willingness to learn.
  • Physical ability to work standing, walk frequently, and transport equipment up to 40 pounds.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate complex situations, exercise independent judgment, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Scholarly writing skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, and physicians.
  • Ability to respond promptly to alarms, verbal instructions, and other auditory cues.
  • Capacity to perform and oversee staff education, patient teaching, and discharge planning.
  • Ability to work with infectious diseases, radiation, and chemotherapeutic agents following established safety protocols.
