POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix (College) is looking for individuals to serve as clinical specialty advisors. Specific areas of interest include anesthesiology and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).
The College provides a collaborative and comprehensive approach to career advising which relies upon two distinct groups of advisors: longitudinal career advisors (house advisors) and clinical specialty advisors (CSA). Clinical specialty advisors serve as the content matter experts for their assigned specialties. The clinical specialty advisor partners with the house advisors to help students prepare for a successful match into their desired specialty via 1:1 student advising, creation and curation of specialty specific resources and contribution to the broader advising program. The CSA also supports career exploration for undecided students through engagement with medical student interest groups, educational sessions, and career exploration activities.
The clinical specialty advisor performs their assigned duties under the supervision of the director of advising, in collaboration with the associate dean of Student Affairs.
The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Clinical Specialty Advisors assigned to more than one specialty/subspecialty must be committed to developing a strong knowledge base for each assigned specialty and facilitating connections with additional specialty mentors for all relevant specialties.
  • Experience mentoring students in research projects.
  • Experience supervising faculty and staff.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication and professionalism skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Have an MD, DO or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be clinically active in specialty area.
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development in areas relevant to academic medicine.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Have completed residency/fellowship in the past 5-10 years.
  • Be board certified in specialty area.
  • Be recognized by faculty and students as a role model and have a strong working knowledge of match process.
  • Be actively engaged with specialty specific professional organization(s) relevant to their assigned specialty and subspecialties.
  • Demonstrate at least three years’ experience in undergraduate medical education.

Contribute to Student Affairs and undergraduate medical education mission (20%)

  • Contribute to ongoing CQI efforts to strengthen advising program.
  • Serve as interest group faculty advisor.
  • Participate in 2 or more academic house activities per year.
  • Establish on-campus office hours at the College at a minimum of once monthly.
  • Participate in college committees and/or workgroups, as needed
Responsibilities

Oversee development, implementation and maintenance of specialty specific resources and educational sessions for all assigned specialties. Conduct 1:1 student advising and complete related tasks for all students within assigned specialty/specialties. (70%)

  • Conduct 6 large group student meetings per year, utilizing specialty advising template.
  • Participate in 3-4 core advising sessions per year, i.e., mock interviews, program director panel discussions and career exploration workshops.
  • Curate and maintain a list of local resources to help students prepare for a successful match, including specialty specific research opportunities, additional mentors within the specialty and opportunities for distinction.
  • Collate and disseminate information collected through specialty specific professional organizations and clinical networks which will aid students in career selection and the match process.
  • Collaborate with house advisors to develop specialty specific advising content, including student guides and online resources.
  • Conduct 2-3 meetings per year with house advising group to review students applying into assigned specialty, identify at-risk students and review individual match strategies.
  • Conduct 1:1 meetings with advisees; frequency varies by class year and will be indicated on the yearly overview.
  • Complete related forms and/or documentation, as indicated in the yearly overview, utilizing the College’s approved data management system.
  • Ensure accessibility and availability for MS1-MS4 students.
  • Assume a leading role in advising 4th year students through the Match process with a focus on establishing realistic match expectations and potential alternatives, addressing match-related concerns as they arise and tailoring match strategy to account for student strengths and weaknesses as well as incoming data (i.e., number of interview invites).
  • Facilitate 1-2 introductions per student with other faculty mentors in student’s field of interest to strengthen student’s support network.
  • Provide research guidance or connect to other faculty to strengthen research opportunities within desired specialty.
  • Remain available to students and Student Affairs team during Match week to support students through SOAP, if needed (typically third week of March).
