REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Hands-on experience managing AWS-based infrastructure, with a strong understanding of EC2, RDS, Lambda, S3, IAM, and CloudWatch.
  • Proven skills in monitoring, alerting, and operational incident handling in cloud environments.
  • Experience with IaC tools and scripting languages (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Python, Bash).
  • Understanding of DevSecOps and CI/CD practices, and experience with platforms like Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or AWS CodePipeline.
  • Familiarity with cloud governance and FinOps, including cost management and optimisation techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with a proactive approach to performance and availability issues.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in agile, cross-functional teams, providing operational input during design and delivery stages.
  • Experience operating within secure government or enterprise environments, with knowledge of compliance, logging, and audit requirements.
Responsibilities

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED FOR THIS ROLE:

  • Must have a Current NV1 security clearance.

  • This will be an Office based/Hybrid role in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide & Sydney locations.
    The Cloud Engineer will be responsible for supporting and optimising cloud infrastructure and operational environments for a large-scale data and analytics program delivered to an end customer in a government department.
    The role ensures cloud platforms are secure, highly available, cost-effective, and aligned with delivery and support standards.
    Operating at SFIA Level 5 within the Application Support (ASUP) framework, the Cloud Engineer will take the lead in managing cloud services, implementing monitoring solutions, supporting infrastructure automation, and ensuring that environments meet operational service levels, security requirements, and performance expectations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate and manage cloud infrastructure environments (primarily AWS), supporting services across multiple domains.
  • Implement and maintain monitoring, alerting, logging, and recovery mechanisms for cloud-native systems.
  • Use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as CloudFormation, Terraform, or AWS CDK to automate deployments.
  • Support incident management and root cause analysis processes for production and non-production environments.
  • Apply DevSecOps practices, enhancing CI/CD pipelines and ensuring secure and compliant deployments.
  • Drive and sustain site reliability engineering (SRE) capabilities and observability frameworks.
  • Collaborate with architecture and development teams to align infrastructure with solution designs.
  • Enhance and monitor FinOps practices, including cloud cost optimisation, tagging strategies, and reporting.
  • Ensure that infrastructure configurations comply with security controls, compliance frameworks, and operational policies.
  • Maintain and update technical documentation, runbooks, and knowledge bases for operational continuity.
  • Participate in infrastructure change planning, testing, approvals, and implementation activities.
