Description

Job Description —

About the Role

The company is building a new greenfield cloud in its German data centers — fully self-hosted, cloud-native, and independent of American hyperscalers.

Each customer receives a dedicated Kubernetes cluster based on the SUSE stack (Harvester, RKE2), deployed and managed through Fleet, with its own tenant management.

You won't simply operate someone else's system. You will design and shape the platform on which the company's SaaS software runs, with real responsibility and significant freedom to make technical decisions.

Digital sovereignty is not just a promise here; it is part of the operational reality. The platform hosts business-critical applications for insurance companies and public-sector clients. Requirements for availability, information security, and compliance/evidence are extremely high. Their managed services are BSI C5 certified/attested.

What You Will Do

Platform Development and Design

  • Design, build, and continuously develop a self-hosted cloud platform with multiple clusters, without dependence on hyperscalers.
  • Design and architect highly available Kubernetes clusters using the SUSE stack, including networking, storage, load balancing, and authentication.
  • Design and further develop the tenant model, providing isolated customer environments and taking responsibility for their architecture and lifecycle.
  • Work closely with development teams on performance- and availability-related requirements for the cluster and tenant architecture.
  • Further develop the high-availability architecture, including a distributed in-memory approach across multiple nodes to ensure real-time application performance during normal operation.

Automation and Standardization

  • Implement GitOps workflows using ArgoCD and Fleet, fully automating everything from initial deployment through day-2 operations.
  • Use Infrastructure as Code with Ansible, Terraform, or comparable tools.
  • Implement Policy as Code for security and governance.
  • Integrate and standardize CI/CD deployment processes.

Working with Development Teams and Customers

  • Provide Platform Engineering for internal teams by building self-service capabilities, defining standards, and supporting onboarding.
  • Actively support development teams in migrating their workloads to the cloud platform.
  • Use operational insights — including monitoring data and incidents — to continuously improve platform stability, security, and performance.

What You Bring

Must-Have

  • Several years of experience in Cloud Engineering, Platform Engineering, container technologies, or infrastructure automation.
  • Strong Kubernetes knowledge, ideally gained from operating production multi-cluster environments.
  • Experience with GitOps workflows, ideally ArgoCD or Fleet, and Infrastructure as Code such as Ansible and Terraform.
  • Business-fluent German (minimum C1) and very good written and spoken English.
  • Willingness to travel for customer meetings and meetings at other company locations.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with the SUSE stack or comparable Kubernetes management platforms.
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps, Policy as Code, or high-availability architectures.
  • Experience with monitoring stacks such as Prometheus and Grafana.

Personal Qualities

They are looking for someone who:

  • Thinks systematically rather than focusing only on individual tickets.
  • Can see the bigger picture.
  • Communicates confidently and effectively with both development teams and customers.
  • Works independently, systematically, and with a solution-oriented mindset.
  • Has experience driving initiatives across team and customer boundaries.

What They Offer

  • Significant responsibility and freedom to implement your own ideas.
  • Primarily office-based work or work directly with customers; home office is the exception.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Internal and external training opportunities.
  • Benefits including BusinessBike, EGYM Wellpass, corporate discounts, and public transport subsidies.
  • Employer-supported pension scheme.
  • Childcare support.
  • Various employee events and activities such as surfing, hiking, mountain biking, and golf.
