BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:
The Campus Core Cloud Team is a small, highly-technical group tasked with designing and building UCSB’s managed cloud environments (including, but not limited to, components such account provisioning, networking, security guidelines, identity systems, monitoring, logging, and dev/ops pipelines) from service offerings such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, G Suite, and Google Cloud Platform. These environments provide secure, reliable, managed accounts for the development, deployment, and operation of UCSB’s enterprise applications as deployed by all of UCSB’s IT units. The Campus Core Cloud Team is responsible for the architecture and operation of the UCSB’s central identity systems which are foundational technologies for UCSB’s enterprise application offerings. These services are enterprise in scope providing services to over 30,000 individuals and are critical requirements of the campus’s IT transformation goals. The Cloud Solutions Architect is a member of the Campus Cloud Core team and is responsible for designing and implementing well-architected applications and services in support of the campus AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform environments. These complex services are assembled from the thousands of possible components available on the cloud platforms in order to solve problems unique to UCSB’s use of these cloud platforms. He or she is responsible for developing performance, usage, and cost metrics for these services in order to rapidly construct newer, more efficient iterations based on these data. The Cloud Solutions Architect also acts as a senior consultant for other campus units as they plan to migrate services to the cloud or to develop new, cloud-native applications. In this role, the incumbent will lead their process from business analysis through application design and implementation with the goal of creating well-architected applications complying with industry and UCSB best practices. Demonstrates a keen understanding of institution‐wide needs and long‐term goals for use of Cloud technologies. Designs and builds solutions to highly-complex problems based on an analysis of the business requirements and processes then selecting tools, technologies, and methods to ensure a well-architected result. Reporting to the Senior Cloud and Identity Architect, Cloud Solutions Architect receives direction in the form of broad organizational objectives and translates these into design requirements, actionable tasks, or coordination efforts with other IT units. This senior IT architect will work to define end state solutions, starting with current conditions, with the ultimate goal of developing cloud services supporting UCSB’s instruction, research, and service missions.
