Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Cloud Specialist, you will be part of a team of engineers building cloud infrastructure for teams across Imperial. Whether you’re collaborating with Product teams in ICT, with covid researchers from the Faculty of Medicine, or our Business School professors, you will lend your expertise to build smart, scalable solutions in Azure using a modern tech stack. The role also requires a great deal of investigation and analysis requirements, so we’re looking for someone who can ably communicate complex technical concepts to a wide variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders at differing levels of seniority. You will also be responsible for evaluating technical infrastructure designs and architectures in line with architectural best practice, such as the well-architected framework, where containers are part of the solution.
You must show expertise in azure networking and design, for segmentation and security best practises. You will contribute to shaping and optimizing our cloud networking architecture. You will work closely with the Server Engineer Team Leader to provide technical guidance for cloud roadmaps and strategies, playing a key role in the development of our Azure Landing Zone footprint. Additionally, you will collaborate with the Data Centre Team to continuously assess the services we provide, implementing improvements where necessary based on your knowledge and experience.

Current tech stack:

  • Terraform and Terraform Cloud
  • Azure, with emphasis on PaaS Functions
  • Kubernetes, Azure Kubernetes Service
  • Splunk
  • Azure Networking

WHAT YOU WOULD BE DOING

  • Provide expert day-to-day technical support for cloud infrastructure deployed within the Azure Landing Zone and elsewhere as agreed.
  • Subject matter expert for containerisation tech, especially Azure Networking.
  • Work with teams across ICT Product Teams, and the wider College, to deploy cloud infrastructure, which they in turn can use to deploy their services.
  • Evaluate containerised solution designs from teams across ICT and the College in line with architectural best practices, and provide feedback or ideas for improvement/optimisation.
  • Continuously improve and develop our cloud infrastructure in line with best practice.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline delivery by creating repeatable patterns (e.g. Terraform modules) which can be consumed by other teams/Azure users, in line with our drive to self-service.
