We are looking for a Coating Engineer to join the Kaiser Aluminum Warrick team outside of Evansville Indiana!
The Coating Engineer performs coating development activities for all Warrick products. An expectation of this role is to coach/mentor others within Warrick, at our supplier(s) and customer (s)on coating formulations, evaluations and manufacturing practices. This position reports directly to Research and Development Manager.
The principal role of this position is twofold: lead the performance evaluation of coating development programs for Warrick, and lead root cause analysis for the plant or customer coating-related issues.

What you will work on:

  • Specialized coatings for metal substrates including aluminum alloys.
  • Conduct coating bench experiments and scale up on pilot line and production equipment.
  • Independent interpretation of the data and preparation of technical reports to BU partners.
  • Regularly update technical and regulatory information for the organization’s use.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels with team members, supervisor, peers, customers, suppliers and plant contacts.
  • Travel to internal or external coater operations for process improvement or Root Cause Analysis.
  • Use innovative skills to design and develop new or more efficient processes with input from project managers, other engineers or supervisor.
  • Provide applied cost input to Procurement, Accounting, and Production functions and optimize application to minimize total cost.
  • Prioritize own work to meet multiple project deadlines with input from project managers and supervisor.
  • Perform assignments involving analysis, interpretation and evaluation of data, complex tasks and/or modifying procedures or equipment to meet customer requirements and project needs.
  • Draw conclusions from technical data and provide alternatives to Kaiser and its customers.
  • Lead and coordinate activities related to projects within own functional specialized area.
  • Solve problems related to own or shared projects with input from supervisor or technical experts.
  • Deliver written/verbal reports with strong data analysis and quantification of both technical and associated cost implications.

What you will bring to the position:

  • Bachelor degree in Sciences required.
  • A minimum of eight plus (8+) years of experience in coatings for metallic based products and processes.
  • Fundamental chemistry and coatings knowledge.
  • Advanced knowledge of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, coating formulation, or coating application.
  • Some experience with coating application (spray, powder, roll, curtain, slot, etc.)
  • Skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project.
  • Demonstrated capability in leadership and accountability.
  • Demonstrated capability in written and oral communications.
  • Creativity to highlight steps to move programs forward from laboratory to pilot scale and into production.
  • Creativity to execute tasks independently and without supervision while staying program objectives.
  • Problem solving skills and ability to think outside the box.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to influence others.
  • Ability to network and collaborate within Warrick Advanced Engineering group and other functions.
