Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a COBOL Developer to join a high-impact modernization initiative with one of our key downtown Pittsburgh based clients. This role is ideal for an engineer ready to lead legacy system modernization while delivering scalable, future-ready architecture.

MUST-HAVE SKILLS:

  • Mainframe Expertise: COBOL, JCL, VSAM, DB2, z/OS
  • Distributed Systems Exposure: Oracle DB, SQL, data synchronization/migration strategies, & ability to write API’s to said systems
  • Tools: FILEAID, AbendAid, SPUFI, QMF, Changeman or Endeavor
  • Automation & Optimization: Proven track record streamlining batch jobs, reporting, and conversions
  • Domain Knowledge: Experience with onboarding, client data conversions, policy administration
  • Soft Skills: Strong communicator, assertive collaborator across time zones, proactive problem-solver

NICE-TO-HAVE SKILLS:

  • Experience in brokerage, mutual funds, or insurance (understanding client flows and financial transactions)
  • Ad hoc reporting and SQL performance tuning
  • Familiarity with job scheduling tools like CA7 or Control-M
Responsibilities
  • Modernize legacy mainframe systems (COBOL, JCL, VSAM, DB2) and enable integration with distributed platforms (Oracle, APIs).
  • Lead efforts to automate high-risk, manual business workflows (e.g., client onboarding/offboarding, account merges).
  • Collaborate effectively with India-based teams and communicate clearly with challenging stakeholders.
  • Own end-to-end delivery: identify gaps, escalate early, and proactively deliver solutions.
  • Deeply understand business processes like cash sweeps—success depends on mastering the domain.
  • Engineer scalable solutions using modern design principles, moving away from monolithic to microservices-based architecture.
  • Navigate complex mainframe systems with little documentation and use modern utilities to decode legacy code.
