Description

The Coding Specialist is responsible for routine and complex encounter coding validation and code assignment, ensuring appropriate coding of services and diagnoses based on a thorough review of clinical documentation in the medical record. This position provides accurate and timely medical, dental, and/or behavioral health coding for One Community Health’s health centers and programs. The Coding Specialist adheres to official coding guidelines to maintain compliance with CMS fraud, waste, and abuse regulations and works collaboratively with Billing Services and the Revenue Cycle team. This role requires a partnership-based, accountable approach in alignment with One Community Health’s Mission, Values, Service Commitments, and Goals. This position is full-time and located at our clinic in Hood River, Oregon.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of Commercial, TPL, and Government payer guidelines
  • Knowledge of collection policies and guidelines, including CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 code systems
  • Proficiency in medical terminology
  • Ability to manage multi-line telephone calls
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to meet team and organizational timelines with safety and high-quality standards
  • Effective relationship management skills in a multidisciplinary, multicultural environment

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Graduate of an AHIMA-accredited Health Information Technology program or self-study certification course from AHIMA or AAPC
  • Completion of coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology

PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Associates Degree with Active Credentials as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or bachelor’s degree with Active Credentials as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Associate degree in medical billing field.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years of healthcare coding experience in a primary care setting
  • 2 years of EHR experience
  • Understanding of healthcare procedures, workflows, and data flow

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Outpatient and professional coding experience
  • Behavioral health and dental coding experience
  • Experience with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC)
  • Familiarity with HRSA requirements
  • Experience with Epic EHR
