JOB DESCRIPTION

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation’s largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment. The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.

The DSNY is seeking College Aides. The responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide clerical and administrative support to staff
  • Gather data from various internal bureaus and external agencies on Expense and Capital budgets
  • Assist with data entry, filing, and document management
  • Assist under supervision in preparing spreadsheets using Excel to develop estimates as well as updating various report data on spreadsheets
  • Maintain and develop capital project database to track Budget Code, Fixed Asset Numbers, CP development and project spending.
  • Under supervision develop and analyze capital project cost proposals for CP requests.
  • Respond to phone and email inquiries professionally
  • Schedule meetings and maintain calendars
  • Support special projects and research tasks as assigned
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience with customer service or office support - Familiarity with database systems or data entry - Interest in public service or government operations
