MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years’ related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for four years experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is preferred.
  • Broad-based knowledge of various software packages such as SolidCAM, Solidworks, Inventor, MasterCAM, Matlab, AutoCAD, Cura, Onshape and other engineering software.
  • Experience providing technical and/or laboratory support in a higher education environment is highly desirable.
  • Commitment to assuring student access to meaningful educational experiences in laboratory settings.
Responsibilities

GENERAL DUTIES

Performs highly-skilled laboratory functions and other technical duties in support of coursework.

  • Sets up, maintains, and organizes student laboratories
  • Assists students with setting up experiments and other learning exercises, and with the use of equipment and materials
  • Maintains appropriate safety and hygiene standards
  • Maintains required documentation related to laboratory activities
  • Manages equipment and materials inventories.

Job Title Name: College Laboratory Technician

The CLT’s key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure lab safety protocols according to OSHA standards, including conducting regular safety inspections, providing safety training to lab users, and maintaining safety documentation.
  • Manage lab materials inventory and ordering processes, and the timely renewal of service contracts, ensuring adequate supplies are available for experiments and projects.
  • Develop and maintain semester-based schedules for part-time lab technicians, coordinating staffing needs with lab courses and supporting professors during scheduled class hours by ensuring the smooth operation of machinery and maintaining a safe environment for students.
  • Oversee maintenance and upkeep of laboratory machinery and equipment, including regular servicing, troubleshooting, and coordinating timely repairs as needed.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and suppliers for equipment purchases, service contracts, and technical support, ensuring timely delivery of materials and services to support lab activities.
  • Oversee installation and setup of new lab machines by coordinating with vendors and facilities management and ensuring proper setup, calibration, and integration into lab operations.
  • Serve as an expert in Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and proficiently operate a variety of CNC machines such as mills, lathes, waterjet, routers, 3D printers, and more.
  • Operate and maintain manual machining equipment, including mill, lathe, materials testing lab equipment, and other related machines.
  • Design and program machining operations through proficient utilization of CAM and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, employing programs such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam and Cura.
