A 12-month fixed-term opportunity at 0.8FTE, with the possibility of variation work Inviting applications for the 2026 Colonel George Johnston Fellowship in Australian History Base Salary Level A $109,263 - $121,054 + 17% superannuation pro rata About the opportunity Applications are invited for the 2026 Colonel George Johnston Fellowship in Australian History. The Fellowship offers opportunities for those seeking to progress further in an academic career or the libraries, archives and museum and heritage sector, and to provide prospects for talented researchers planning other careers to ensure that their research reaches a wider audience. The Fellowship provides financial support to a postdoctoral student to improve their publication record within six years of being awarded a PhD. This can include the publication of a doctoral thesis. The Fellowship is offered as part-time (FTE 0.8) for a period of 12 months at academic Level A. There is also opportunity to take the fellowship at a lower FTE to extend beyond one year subject to the approval of the Discipline Chair and Head of School. The fellowship is non-renewable. Your key responsibilities will be to: lead an original research project present results of research at conferences, and other settings (e.g. guest lectures, workshops) both in Australia and internationally collaborate on publications in the form of written articles, an edited book, and participate in public facing communications (including radio, television, social media outlets) assist in developing/co-ordinating research activities (e.g.: workshops and conferences) and participate in the setting of future research directions of the project assist with the mentoring of the PhD students related to the project. About you To be considered for the Fellowship, applicants must have completed a PhD within the last six years. Applicants must commit to writing up their thesis as a book and submit the manuscript to a reputable academic press; or to submit 3 publishable articles to reputable refereed philosophy journals (either during the tenure of the award acknowledge the support of the gift fund that funds the Fellowships and the affiliation with the University of Sydney in any publications related to the fellowship funding). Applicants must hold a PhD in history (or a related discipline, provided that their proposed project is strongly historical in nature). The fellowship will be awarded based on: the significance and originality of the research project the feasibility of producing a book manuscript, or a body of articles or corpus of non-traditional research outputs, suitable for publication by the end of the fellowship value applicants must hold a PhD in history (or a related discipline, provided that their proposed project is strongly historical in nature) strong track record of outstanding research of national or international standing excellent oral and written communication skills demonstrated experience in collaborative processes with demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team demonstrated capacity to deliver high-quality project outcomes in a timely manner The successful candidate will be able to take on casual teaching work up to a maximum of 0.2 within the 0.8 FTE for one year. The Fellowship may be taken part-time and so extend beyond one year subject to approval of the Chair of Discipline and Head of School. The fellowship is non-renewable. Historians of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, and/or scholars working in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander history are especially encouraged to apply. The Fellow will have access to $10,000 from the Colonel George Johnson bequest for research travel, conference participation, and/or publication costs (including subventions). The Fellow will be eligible to apply for other discipline, school, and university funding to support their research.
