Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Commercial Analyst (Cross Bench) plays a critical role in delivering high-quality market analysis to support trading decisions across Ampol’s global Trading & Shipping business. Rather than focusing on a single product, this role provides exposure across the barrel—supporting analysis across crude, refined products, and other commodities as required. The analyst will develop, maintain, and enhance global supply-demand models, delivering timely, data-driven insights into market fundamentals. By working closely with traders and commercial teams, the role helps shape trading strategies through structured analysis of evolving market dynamics. The Commercial Analyst will also contribute to the T&S Data Analytics Roadmap, helping to build Ampol’s end-to-end data and analytics capability and supporting more informed, commercially focused decision-making.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fundamental Modelling & Forecasting: Build, maintain and enhance global Supply & Demand models for crude oil and refined products. Collaborate with the data scientist to enhance models using statistical, econometric and machine learning techniques, and integrating new/alternative datasets. Incorporate feedback and insights from broader team of traders and commercial analysts to enhance the centralised models. Ensure transparency, documentation and version controls of fundamental models and assumptions.
  • Support Trading Decisions via Delivery of Timely Actionable Insights: Facilitate discussions on fundamentals to support informed decision making. Bring forward timely market insights and relevant/scenario analysis, and drive engagement with broader team of traders and commercial analysts to help formulate view on market direction and inform new trade ideas, price dislocations, trading or arbitrage opportunities.
  • Monitor and Analyse Market Trends/Developments: Track and analyse micro and macro trends that may impact physical and financial oil markets to perform forecasts. These may include refinery developments and outages, weather forecasts, sanctions, OPEC+ decisions, feedstock economics, macroeconomic trends, inventory levels, amongst others.
  • Support the Delivery of T&S Data Analytics Roadmap: Contribute to the delivery of the data analytics roadmap by collaborating with the Data Product and Data Science Team to build out T&S end-to-end data analytics capabilities to drive proactive data-driven trading discussions and support informed decision-making.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  • Publish weekly and monthly market commentary with inputs from other team members.
  • Engage with Trading and Shipping, Strategy, Business Development, or other parts of Ampol where relevant to share market developments and insights through various platforms and channels. Where relevant, perform topical analysis and support ad-hoc data requests.
  • Track competitors’ activities into Australia and New Zealand, and in other geographies where relevant or required through ship tracking and other market intelligence.
  • Support analysis and decision making in response to identified market changes, including product specification changes, contracting, regulatory changes, etc.
