Job Summary: The Communications Officer provides non- emergency and emergency communication through professional and positive interaction with the public, students, employees and administrators. Receives a variety of calls and provides assistance in emergency and non-emergency situations, monitors various alarm systems, infant abduction systems and radio communication. Dispatches both electronically and via radio the appropriate personnel to emergent and general calls for service. Documents crimes and incidents as they are reported or occur. Performs electronic surveillance as directed to insure the protection of the public, students, employees and property of LLUH or others. Performs other duties as needed. Education and Experience: Minimum one year of telephone and professional communications or law enforcement dispatcher experience preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Operate/troubleshoot basic office equipment required for the position. Ability to accomplish complicated hand motions. Able to safely operate equipment and communications devices. Able to perform job duties while wearing necessary equipment and personal protective gear. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; tact and diplomacy in dealing with all levels of people. To understand and be understood in the English language. Professional demeanor and appearance. Exceptional ability to remain calm in crisis situations. Advanced planning and organizational skills, critical thinking, setting and (quickly) resetting priorities, creation of complex problem resolution, anticipation of department needs for training or assistance, clear communication in English, orally and in writing. Ability to read, interpret and apply safety rules, penal codes, vehicular codes, radio codes, reports, memos, communications, policies and other required written materials. Able to perform basic math. Able to work, train and multi-task in an environment with occurring periods of crisis and stress. Able to distinguish colors as necessary; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.
