Description

SUMMARY

Development, coordination and execution of communications strategies; professional, technical, and administrative support assisting with daily operation of website management, social media and other related administrative functions for Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment (BCDHE); all other related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in communications, journalism, web content development or related field and 3 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of social media and web content development, social media platforms and appropriate communication strategies are required.
    Ability: Position requires the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately to the public; plan, organize, analyze problems and formulate recommendations; the ability to manage priorities and perform follow-up activities with limited supervision; the ability to learn quickly, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines; prepare and disseminate written content and a variety of information to wide range of audiences; recognize priorities and work cooperatively and collaboratively to support their accomplishment.
    Skills: Position requires interpersonal/collaborative communication, and discretion; proficiency in researching, writing, organizing, and editing information for publication on websites and in print publications. Also required are computer skills that encompass effective use of word processing spreadsheets, presentation, desktop publishing (Adobe InDesign, Publisher), event/email marketing software (e.g. Constant Contact, Formstack, Survey Monkey), WordPress, and basic HTM, and other specialized software used for graphic design.

Minimal physical effort required. May be required to move/transport up to 25 pounds such as boxes and books. Ability to operate a keyboard and standard office equipment at efficient speed and to view computer screens for an extended period. Operates automobile to perform County-wide travel to transact business.

Responsibilities
  • The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Produces written and visual/multimedia content for website and social media networks to raise the visibility of services and programs at BCDHE.
  • Serves as Public Information Officer for BCDH&E and the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee and a back up to the Public Information Officer for the County of Barnstable.
  • Coordinates with BCDHE Director, Deputy Director and other senior and technical staff to develop strategies for effective public engagement, education and communication.
  • Monitors media outlets for BCDHE related information, checking for accuracy and following up with corrections as needed.
  • Posts regular content for Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms for the BCDHE, as provided by the BCDHE director and staff.
  • Manages submissions, prepares and distributes newsletters via email marketing tools, i.e., Constant Contact, etc., uses design software to edit photographs and artwork.
  • Develops print materials, including written and graphic content for newsletters, flyers, brochures, press releases, reports, and infographics.
  • Manages the main BCDHE WordPress website, including overseeing the production of new content and its ongoing development to include analytics reports. Maintains press databases that include contacts at newspapers, magazines, TV stations, radio stations, and blogs. Comfortable with content management platforms like Wordpress, Wix, etc.
  • Keeps track of current services and programs at the BCDHE and maintains strategies to leverage opportunities for communications.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates health communication activities designed to impact positive health outcomes.
  • Develops strategies and implementation plans for County programs for health initiatives and prevention campaigns for the general public.
  • Develops, tests, and disseminates science and scientific information and audience-based products, tools, and messages (i.e., via written, electronic, and audiovisual formats) to different audiences in a variety of formats.
  • Works closely with strategic communications subject matter experts and other colleagues to leverage knowledge and resources, ensure consistency of messages, and fosters teamwork.
  • Serves as back up to County Public Information Officer when required with 24/7 designation during emergencies.
