Description

Outside The Lens (OTL) is seeking a design-forward, future-minded Communications Designer to join our team and elevate the impact of our mission-driven storytelling. This is a unique opportunity to bring your creativity, curiosity, and design expertise to a youth-powered media arts organization making real change in San Diego and beyond.

POSITION OVERVIEW

This full-time role offers an exciting opportunity to help shape and steward the next chapter of OTL’s brand, which launched in January 2025. With a vibrant and well-defined visual identity now in place, the Communications Designer will ensure consistency across all platforms while bringing innovation, vision, and expertise to our content strategy.
The ideal candidate will collaborate with educators, artists, and youth to transform a dynamic flow of new student-created media—alongside a growing archive of assets—into compelling campaigns, social content, print materials, and digital experiences. This role balances brand adherence with creative freedom, inviting the designer to explore new formats, emerging tools, and authentic ways to connect with our community through visual storytelling.

QUALIFICATIONSCORE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Digital Media, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience managing creative projects from concept to completion—especially across print, web, and social platforms.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating brand-aligned design work, visual storytelling, and adaptability across formats.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and CMS platforms (e.g., Squarespace or WordPress).
  • Experience managing social media accounts and developing content strategies across channels.
  • Strong written, visual, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Organized, self-directed, and able to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally as needed
  • Ability to lift and move items up to 25 pounds
  • Flexibility to support occasional evening/weekend programs or events
