Position Summary:
Reporting to the Associate Director, Content and Publications, within McGill University Advancement (UA) Communications, the Communications Officer will be responsible for the creation of a wide range of Advancement communications and marketing materials across many platforms to support McGill’s fundraising initiatives and to keep alumni, donors, and friends closely connected and well-informed about the University.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Produce and edit a wide range of communications materials targeting students, alumni, prospective and past donors, parents and friends of the University, including content for e-newsletters, press releases, and web copy for McGill Giving, McGill News, McGill Alumni and other UA websites.
- Work with fundraisers, communications professionals, professors, students and other stakeholders across the University to craft communications and hone strategies aimed at improving McGill’s relationship and fundraising success with a wide variety of existing and prospective donors, ranging from Annual Giving and Planned Giving initiatives to major gifts.
- Produce Alumni Engagement communications content, including event promotion and marketing, speaking notes, alumni programs promotion, and other materials.
- Write high quality speaking notes for senior Advancement and University leadership (including the VP of University Advancement, the President, and the Chancellor) ensuring consistency in messaging and alignment with University communications priorities.
- Work closely with the project management team, graphic designers, digital communications experts, translators, Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving professionals, and other colleagues and freelancers to ensure that materials are completed on deadline and to the highest standards.
- Nurture productive and collaborative relationships with faculty members, students, fundraisers and other stakeholders across the University to support McGill’s Advancement goals.
- Develop new and creative means of engaging and soliciting a wide range of audiences and demographics.
- Contribute to the development of creative communications strategies that will help achieve maximum impact with an efficient use of resources.
- Assist with review of Communications content in translation (French), with the ability to provide editing, proofreading/copyediting support.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- Undergraduate degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or similar liberal arts program required.
- Three years of experience in content writing required.
- Outstanding writing skills with the flexibility and creativity to create copy for a variety of media, and addressing a range of audiences. A demonstrated ability to create high impact communications materials across a wide spectrum of topics.
- Demonstrated experience in writing content specifically for advancement purposes, including fundraising initiatives, alumni engagement, and donor relations a strong asset.
- Fluency in social media and other emerging communications platforms.
- The capacity to liaise with internal and external clients and to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, changing, deadline-oriented environment.
- The demonstrated ability to work in a PC environment using MS Office.
- Knowledge of working within Content Management Systems for websites and/or email marketing platforms an asset.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English. Strong French reading comprehension skills and editorial skills for reviewing material in translation.
