ABOUT COMMUNITY ACTION INITIATIVE

We are Community Action Initiative (CAI), a nonprofit transforming mental health and substance use (MHSU) support across B.C. As connectors between grassroots organizations and government, we nurture community-led efforts, aligning local needs with provincial objectives. Through capacity building and trust-based granting, we ensure local wisdom and lived experiences shape MHSU programming. We believe lasting change starts with listening to communities, fostering a more community-centred approach to MHSU support.   

POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Specialist plays a key role in producing graphic and visual communications that tell CAI’s impact story across its diverse programs and initiatives and to further advance advocacy efforts.
Reporting to the Director of Engagement, this role focuses on the design and delivery of professional materials including reports, presentation decks, event collateral, and digital assets. CAI has recently undergone a full rebranding and website revamp; the emphasis now is on maintaining and optimizing assets. This position develops and oversees supports the production of digital and print materials that align with CAI’s brand and strategic priorities, working closely with project teams to deliver accessible and engaging content.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or a related discipline.
  • Advanced knowledge of visual communications, graphic design, impact storytelling, branding, and layout production.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in visual communications, graphic design, or related communications roles.
  • Demonstrated success producing accessible and engaging content for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency with a comprehensive suite for graphic design and video/photo editing, website content management systems, email marketing and automation platforms and digital analytics platforms.
  • Experience producing and managing digital communications (e.g., social media and newsletters).
  • Strong writing and editing skills for concise, engaging copy.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with attention to detail.
  • Experience working with non-profits or in community-based initiatives is preferred.
  • Personal experience or connection to mental health & substance use is considered an asset.

Responsibilities
  • Design and produce professional visual content using tools such as Adobe InDesign and Canva, including reports, PowerPoint decks, social media graphics, event materials, and more.
  • Develop and maintain communications collateral for CAI events (e.g., invitations, agendas, programs, presentation decks, swag).
  • Lead the development of Assist in creating short-form and long-form impact storytelling content in collaboration with Managers, grantees, and stakeholders.
  • Assist withOversee and direct the layout and visual storytelling for comprehensive impact reports and infographics.
  • Design communications that advance CAI’s advocacy efforts and highlight systemic issues impacting the communities CAI supports.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to enhance Maintain and enhance CAI’s digital presence by managing updates and optimizations to CAI’s website and social media platforms.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate Revise and execute CAI’s social media strategy to improve reach, engagement, and alignment with brand tone and priorities.
  • Support CAI’s ongoing stakeholder engagement by collaborating on regular webinar coordination: managing invites, monitoring RSVPs, designing decks, and assisting with evaluation forms.
  • Lead the Coordinate production of CAI’s bi-monthly newsletter and annual report by sourcing stories, editing content, and producing visually engaging formats.
  • Develop and maintain a centralized repository of communication assets and program metrics to support strategic storytelling.
  • Produce one-page visual profiles for each Community Action Table (CAT), capturing local impact and program activity.
  • Consult with and guideLiaise with Managers to collect key grantee outcomes data and support the shift from output tracking to outcome measurement.
  • Ensure all communications comply with CAI’s brand guidelines and maintain visual consistency across media.
  • Manage vendor relationships and negotiations for communication needs such as professional Support vendor coordination such as printing servicesers.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying innovative communication formats or practices.
