Let’s be honest - roads are always a talking point. From potholes and roadside mowing, to major upgrades and traffic changes, transport projects are some of the most visible — and most talked-about — topics in the community. Which means there’s plenty to do - and plenty to get right - as a communications specialist. That’s where you come in. At Western Bay of Plenty District Council, we’re investing heavily in transport infrastructure. In the past year alone, we delivered a record $134 million capital programme, including significant roading upgrades across the District. With that level of investment comes strong community interest, high expectations, and a real need to communicate clearly, consistently, and proactively. We’re looking for a communications specialist to join us for 12 months to help improve how we explain why projects are happening, what people can expect, and how we listen and respond to feedback along the way. You’ll support a wide range of transport and roading projects — from local improvements through to major infrastructure upgrades. All of which directly impact how people move around the District - and are often front of mind for our communities. About the role 12-month fixed term Leading communications planning and delivery for transport and roading projects Working alongside project teams to ensure communications are timely, accurate and aligned Creating clear, accessible content that explains why projects are happening, what’s changing, and when Managing project updates across channels – website content, social media and newsletters Supporting responses to community feedback, questions and concerns Providing regular updates and briefings for elected members and internal stakeholders Identifying opportunities to improve how we communicate transport projects and lift overall understanding Helping manage issues and risks where projects generate community concern or interest You’ll bring 3+ years’ communications experience in infrastructure, transport, or public sector projects Strong writing, editing and digital content skills Experience delivering community engagement (e.g. drop-ins, meetings). Engagement Institute (formerly IAP2) accreditation. The ability to turn complex or technical information into clear, accessible content Confidence engaging with communities and managing different perspectives Strong relationship skills and the ability to work across teams and stakeholders Good judgement and the ability to stay calm when issues arise Applicants for this position should have NZ residency or a valid NZ work permit.
