Description
The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. "Located in the John Deutsch University Centre (JDUC), the AMS Communications Office is responsible for overseeing the public image, brand, and messaging of the Alma Mater Society. The office manages the two-way flow of information between AMS leadership and the undergraduate student body, helping students stay informed, engaged, and represented. As a support-based department, the Communications Office works closely with every commission, service, and office within the AMS to ensure that events, campaigns, and initiatives are communicated clearly and professionally. Volunteers in this office contribute to the AMS’s mission of transparency, accessibility, and student-centered governance by helping to create content, draft messaging, and maintain a consistent tone and visual identity across all platforms. This is a great opportunity for students interested in marketing, website design, journalism, or public relations. Volunteers will be able to build real-world communication and leadership skills while directly supporting student advocacy and campus-wide programming. Our office also aims to reflect I-EDIAA values by ensuring that all messaging is inclusive, accessible, and representative of the Queen’s community. Volunteers will work closely with the Communications Director and may be assigned to support specific campaigns or portfolios depending on availability and interest." Responsibilities: Support the Communications Director in creating and editing newsletters Assist in updating the AMS website and blog with student-facing content Help monitor and track engagement across digital platforms (LinkedIn, website, newsletter) Participate in brainstorming meetings for campaigns, awareness weeks, and advocacy messaging Attend all team training sessions and contribute to a positive, inclusive working environment Be familiar with AMS visual identity guidelines and ensure materials align with branding standards Maintain regular communication with the Director and complete tasks in a timely manner Follow all AMS policies as outlined in the Volunteer Policy and Procedures Manual Attend scheduled team meetings and contribute to evaluations and feedback processes The AMS is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of age, race, religion, colour, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.
