JOB SUMMARY

The Council for Disability Concerns (CfDC) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual with a strong interest or background in disability inclusion to support the council’s outreach and engagement efforts. This temporary position will serve as a key point of contact between the CfDC and campus/community partners, helping to advance the council’s mission through relationship building, event coordination, and consistent communication.

WHO WE ARE

The University of Michigan Council for Disability Concerns (CfDC) works towards creating a community that respects disability, honors individual needs, and makes everything accessible.
The CfDC was founded in 1983 by then University President Harold Shapiro, with the original charge to act in an advisory capacity regarding university programs and policies affecting people with disabilities. Today, the Council has over 300 members on its mailing list and includes U-M staff, faculty, students, and alums from all campuses, as well as community members from Southeastern Michigan. The Council meets monthly.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Demonstrated knowledge of disability culture, including an understanding of the social, cultural, and legal aspects of disability and accessibility.
  • Experience with, or strong interest in, disability inclusion and advocacy at the university and/or community level.
  • Familiarity with campus-based and local (Ann Arbor/SE Michigan) disability initiatives, resources, and organizations.
  • Experience coordinating with teams to run and lead large, accessible meetings and events in virtual and in-person formats.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in coordinating and managing multiple calendars and scheduling across diverse groups.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple ongoing tasks, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Availability to attend regular meetings, including occasional evenings or weekends, and participate in community or campus events.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Familiarity with the CfDC’s mission, processes, or similar campus/community disability organizations preferred.
  • Existing network of connections within the local disability community.
  • Established track record of disability advocacy.
Responsibilities
  • Respond to emails and meeting requests from campus and community partners on behalf of CfDC
  • Proactively follow up with individuals or groups who express interest but do not respond
  • Initiate new meetings and connections that align with and further the CfDC mission
  • Coordinate and schedule monthly guest speakers whose topics align with council members’ interests and promote accessibility and inclusion
  • Attend and potentially facilitate monthly CfDC meetings
  • Represent CfDC at relevant campus and community events or meetings
  • Assist in planning and coordinating CfDC-sponsored events and activities
